In an easy-to-read style, the authors discuss the structure and function of bark, the unique qualities in bark that make tree identification possible, and the ingenious ways bark has adapted to a hostile environment. Separate chapters on bark-derived products - such as tannin, resin, latex, medicine and poison, various hallucinatory compounds, flavorings for food, and cork - illustrate the diverse and creative ways in which bark has been put to use. From making cloth and canoes to providing fuel and fiber, people around the world have found bark to be both beautiful and beneficial. And in the world of insects and animals, bark functions as camouflage, food, and home for a variety of creatures

2 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 299 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Professors Schultes and Raffauf, in this re-issue of their classic book, take us on a journey to a place where healing with plants is the norm, and where ritual and magic play an essential role in everyday life. This book is the story of a time that was - when the Amazon Indians, living in their verdant and expansive rainforest, had a minimum of contact with cultures of the outside world. Thus, we have a firsthand picture of traditional life in this region. In Vie of the Soul - a companion book to Where the Gods Reign - Drs. Schultes and Raffauf collaborate to produce an exceptional photographic essay accompanied by detailed descriptions of the Amazon Indian's use of medicinal and other sacred plant substances. Included are over 160 of the most significant photographs ever taken on this subject" -- Back cover

Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker : traveller and plant collector by
Ray Desmond(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 210 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Sir Joseph Hooker is remembered as an eminent Victorian botanist and one of Charles Darwin's closest collaborators. Many gardeners and lovers of rhododendrons know of his plant collecting expedition in the Himalayas, but few are aware of his participation in Sir James Clark Ross's epic voyage to Antarctica in 1839-43, of his visits to Syria and Lebanon in 1860, to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco in 1871 and to the Rockies and California in 1877. At some risk to his own safety and health (he came close to drowning in the Antarctic Ocean and was imprisoned by the Rajah of Sikkim), he discovered many new species of plants and introduced a number of attractive flowers into British gardens. Extracts from his letters home and his published Himalayan Journals testify to his narrative skills, his constant curiosity and careful observation which combined to make him an outstanding scientific traveller."--Jacket
