Sidney Nolan by Sidney Nolan( Book )

8 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 308 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The speed at which Sidney Nolan worked, and the expansiveness of his production, has always presented something of a dilemma for the retrospective defining of his genius. John Olsen once described Nolan as having a wild eye, by which he was able to glimpse a motif with the instantaneousness of a lens shutter, spawning a bewildering plethora of images, from ephemeral sketches to large-scale compositions, many of which have become indelible icons of 20th century Australian art. This retrospective, consisting of approximately 116 paintings, will be presented in chronological order, underlining the evolution of Nolans vision from its genesis in St Kilda during the late 1930s to the United Kingdom half a century later
Brett Whiteley : art & life by Barry Pearce( Book )

13 editions published in 1995 in English and Undetermined and held by 285 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Brett Whiteley died in 1992 at the age of fifty-three, ending one of the most prodigious careers in the history of Australian art. He attended Julian Ashton's school in Sydney during the late 1950s while working at the advertising agency Lintas, and then made an impact on the Australian art world just as it was receiving unprecedented international attention. Whiteley achieved wide recognition, spending a long period abroad, exhibiting paintings, drawings and sculpture in Britain, Europe and the United States, before returning to Sydney permanently at the end of 1969. His years in London were particularly formative, when he came into contact with many of the art world's most influential figures, including members of the Abstract Expressionist and Pop Art movements." "Whiteley's early paintings startled critics and fellow artists with their sensuality of color and erotic under-drawing. At the root of all Whiteley's work was a draftsmanship of stunning virtuosity, capable of capturing all the poetic arabesque of a river in a single sweeping line of brush and ink, or the erotic curves of the human body in a few searching strokes of charcoal." "This book, published to coincide with an exhibition at The Art Gallery of New South Wales - the first major retrospective of the artist's work - presents an illuminating evaluation of Whiteley's achievement. Works dating from the 1950s until the last years of his life, illustrated in 180 color plates, allow Whiteley's fascinating career to be surveyed in its entirety."--Jacket

Jeffrey Smart retrospective by Edmund Capon( Book )

4 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The paintings of Jeffrey Smart, one of Australia's most celebrated expatriate painters, have entranced and intrigued the public for over half a century. Taking subject matter from all that would appear bleak about the modern world - highways, inhospitable cities, impersonal contemporary architecture - Smart has created a unique kind of beauty. Produced to accompany the 1999 Retrospective, it describes the artists working process with many illustrations of paintings complemented by studies and sketches. This catalogue contains essays by Edmund Capon and Barry Pearce with an infusion of Jeffrey Smart's compelling letters and quotes. This publication is destined to have a long life beyond the exhibition as an enduring art book

Over five decades, Jeffrey Smart has produced a body of work which reflects and comments on the life of our time in a way that would have pleased Bauldelaire who urged artists to look about them for their subject matter in his essay 'The painter of modern life'. (From verso)

Margaret Hannah Olley AC was an Australian painter who was the subject of more than 90 solo exhibitions. She was born in Lismore, N.S.W. Her work concentrated on still life. In 1997 a major retrospective of her work was organized by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. She received the inaugural Mosman Art Prize in 1947. Olley was twice the subject of an Archibald Prize winning painting; the first by William Dobell in 1948 and the other by Ben Quilty in 2011. She was also the subject of paintings by many of her artist friends, including Russell Drysdale. On 10 June 1991, in the Queens Birthday Honours list, Olley was made a Member of the Order of Australia for service as an artist and to the promotion of art. "Brett Whiteley died in 1992 at the age of fifty-three, ending one of the most prodigious careers in the history of Australian art. He attended Julian Ashton's in Sydney during the late 1950s while working at the advertising agency Lintas, and then made an impact on the Australian art world just as it was receiving unprecedented international attention. Whiteley achieved wide recognition, spending a long period abroad, exhibiting paintings, drawings and sculpture in Britain, Europe, and the United States, before returning to Sydney permanently at the end of 1969." "Whiteley's early paintings startled critics and fellow artists. With their sensuality of colour and erotic under-drawing, two basic subjects were evident: the landscape and the nude. Sometimes pursued separately, sometimes juxtaposed, and often intriguingly combined, these elements became the mainstay of his oeuvre." "This book, published to coincide with an exhibition at The Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1995 - the first major retrospective of the artist's work - presents an evaluation of Whiteley's achievement. Works dating from the 1950s until the last years of his life, illustrated in 180 colour plates, allow Whiteley's career to be surveyed in its entirety. Three accompanying texts provide different perspectives on his life and art: Barry Pearce gives a comprehensive overview of the artist and his work; Bryan Robertson offers an impression of Whiteley's years in London; and Wendy Whiteley, his model and wife for over three decades, contributes an intimate portrait of the man behind the work."--BOOK JACKET
