"Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) was one of the most innovative and influential thinkers of the twentieth century. Best known as the inventor of the geodesic dome, Fuller sought out long-term, technology-led solutions to the world's most pressing social and environmental problems. His prodigious creative output-from visionary architectural works and experimental structures to expressive drawings and poetic musings-foreshadowed today's green design and prefab housing movements. R. Buckminster Fuller: World Man documents his never-before-published 1966 Kassler lecture at Princeton University School of Architecture. Delivered at the height of his career (Fuller had appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1964), he used the lecture to reflect on and synthesize his most significant concepts. In addition to a faithful facsimile of the lecture's typewritten transcript, the book includes an introductory essay on Fuller's work, a glossary of key terms and phrases, and an interview with Robert Geddes, the dean responsible for bringing Fuller to teach and lecture at the school"--
Debating austerity in Ireland : crisis, experience and recovery by Emma Heffernan( )

5 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 567 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The austerity that followed the recent economic and financial crisis in has led to impassioned debates across the social sciences and the public at large. Although Ireland was not its only victim, the depth of the interacting economic, banking and budgetary crises has meant that the level of public interest has been especially intense. Among the hotly debated questions: what is austerity? Was it necessary? What have been its consequences? One of the defining features of the debate to date has been its tendency to polarise opinion and adopt a one-dimensional perspective. This book challenges us to adopt a more nuanced approach to understandings of austerity, and by extension the path to recovery. The book brings together leading national and international experts from across the social sciences to debate this traumatic period in Ireland's economic and social development. The papers were selected from a conference at the Royal Irish Academy, peer-reviewed and rewritten with the addition of a substantial introduction and conclusion by the editors.--

The target group consists of those who are below or just below poverty line. The book is presented in six chapters. Chapter I considers the dimensions of need. The chapter presents world statistics on undernourishment, literacy, income, life expectancy, and inadequate housing. It stresses that provision for psychosocial as well as physiological needs must be made. Chapter ii suggests three lines of approach in assessing priority areas: the reference country, unit household, and life cycle methods. Chapter iii discusses ways of establishing basic need levels, deficits, and targets. A review of population trends is included. Chapter iv considers alternatives in development and the needs/environment interaction. Chapter v discusses ways to meet needs deficiencies while considering environmental and developmental objectives within which needs would be met. Topics include food and agriculture, health services, education, shelter, and clothing. Chapter vi considers directions of technological development and the role of international trade in determining the degrees of self-reliance and interdependence of developing countries.
