Jewett struck her characteristic note in her first collection, Deephaven (1877), stories whose exploration of Maine life moved and delighted readers when they were first published in the Atlantic Monthly, and opened a new vein of regional fiction in American literature. Of the distinctly local quality of her writings Willa Cather later said: "The language her people speak to each other is a native tongue. No writer can invent it. It is made in the hard school of experience, in communities where language has been undisturbed long enough to take on color and character from the nature and experiences of the people."
A country doctor by Sarah Orne Jewett( Book )

75 editions published between 1884 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,288 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"As the ward of the widowed physician Dr. Leslie, young Nan Prince becomes interested in medicine. But when she enters a medical college, she finds she must choose between marriage and a career as a doctor, between the expectations of society and her duty to her true self. In part an homage to Sarah Orne Jewett's beloved father, A Country Doctor portrays an America on the verge of change and Nan, ultimately, as a courageous young woman with a new world opening to her." "This edition, which reproduces the obituary of her father that Jewett wrote but published anonymously, includes an introduction exploring the rise of women doctors in nineteenth-century America and showing A Country Doctor as a pioneering narrative of a woman passionately following her professional calling."--Jacket

Deephaven by Sarah Orne Jewett( Book )

98 editions published between 1877 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 900 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

While often called a novel, this book consists of 13 tightly interwoven stories, a familiar format for Jewett. Two 24-year-old city dwellers, Helen Denis and Kate Lancaster, visit the rural Maine town of Deephaven for the summer. Over the course of their stay they meet many idiosyncratic locals, including the eccentric lighthouse keeper Mrs. Kew, the town gossip Olive Grant, and others. The two women compare life in the city to life in the country, and Jewett uses their experiences to contrast the two sides of the American experience. Several of the chapters were previously published by Jewett's friend James Thomas Fields in the Atlantic Monthly

Jewett spent much of her later life in Boston, and after her friend James Thomas Fields died she shared a house with his widow Annie Fields. The two women's home was a social center of the New England literary scene, with both Fields and Jewett holding court as a variety of friends and fellow writers came and went. This volume, edited and published by Fields after Jewett's death, contains correspondence between Jewett and authors such as Willa Cather, John Greenleaf Whittier and others. Fields and Jewett also traveled abroad together, and the book contains letters to distant friends in Europe
