Canto general by Pablo Neruda( Book )

427 editions published between 1900 and 2018 in 13 languages and held by 3,454 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pablo Neruda's epic poem Canto General is a prodigious work that scrolls out like the chronicle of a journey through the Americas, as the poet strives to provide a unifying vision of reality. Neruda's most audacious and ambitious achievement, Canto General locates and reveals communal sources of strength in the place of our origin, land of our ancestors. The poet depicts history as a vast, continuous struggle against oppression. Constructed in fifteen parts, and made up of more than fifteen thousand lines, Canto General unfolds in successive epochs, celebrating the flora and fauna and geology of Neruda's homeland and recounting episodes in the lives of explorers and conquistadors, emperors and dictators, revolutionaries and everyday laborers.--

Twenty love poems and a song of despair by Pablo Neruda( Book )

30 editions published between 1969 and 2006 in 3 languages and held by 1,352 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

First published in 1924, Veinte Poemas de Amor y una Cancion Desesperada remains among Neruda's most popular work. Daringly metaphorical, these poems are based upon his own private associations. Their sensuous use of nature symbolism to celebrate love and to express grief has not been surpassed in the literature of our century. This edition offers the original Spanish text, with masterly translations by W.S. Merwin on facing pages
Song of protest by Pablo Neruda( Book )

Fully empowered by Pablo Neruda( Book )

15 editions published between 1975 and 2005 in English and held by 1,053 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Fully Empowered" first appeared in Spanish in 1962, under the title "Plenos Poderes". Neruda himself regarded this collection as a particular favorite, partly because it came out of a most fruitful period in his life, partly because it is a miscellany of poetic manners, a representative anthology of his vast poetic range. The thirty-six poems vary from short, intense lyrics through characteristic Neruda odes and whimsical addresses to friends to magnificent meditations on the office a poet, and include a few poems which would unquestionably claim a place in any selection of Neruda's greatest work, notably "The People" ("El Pueblo"), the most celebrated of his later poems. "Fully Empowered" could well serve as a concentrated demonstration of the dazzling diversity, in manner and theme, of this most inexhaustible of poets. -- From publisher's description
Extravagaria : [poems] by Pablo Neruda( Book )

27 editions published between 1972 and 1996 in 3 languages and held by 1,018 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Extravagaria" was one of Neruda's favorite collections and marks an important stage in the progress of his poetry. It was written at the point in his life when he had returned to Chile after many wanderings and had come to rest in Isla Negra, the small settlement on the Pacific coast that became his last home. The poems celebrate this coming to rest, this rediscovery of the sea and the land. In "Extravagaria" Neruda evolved a lyric poetry that is decidedly more personal than his earlier work. Written in what he called his "autumnal" period, the sixty-eight poems range from the wistful to the exultant, combining psalm and speculation, meditation and humorous aside. Finally, in the long "Autumn Testament," Neruda assesses himself and his writings. -- From publisher's description

Isla Negra : a notebook by Pablo Neruda( Book )

14 editions published between 1981 and 2008 in English and Spanish and held by 706 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the over one hundred poems contained in Isla Negra, Pablo Neruda fashioned a kind of poetic autobiography in which he set out to explore and gather the various "lives" or "selves" he had left behind him in the huge span of his writing existence. Written in his "autumnal" period, from the vantage point of Isla Negra, the small village on the Pacific coast of Chile which he came to regard as the center of his world, the book reads like a series of notes in which present and past interact, and is perhaps the most self-confronting of all his collections
