Contemporary Latin America : a short history ; text and readings by Lewis Hanke( Book )

11 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 442 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The indefatigable Lewis Hanke has given our guild another useful teaching aid in the form of this brief history, combining text and readings. Freshness and realism are among the salient qualities of this text. The all-too-frequent tendency to gloss over the unpleasant facts of contemporary Latin American society and to dull the sharp edges of inter-American conflicts is absent from this book, which combines sprightly writing with the sound scholarship that we have learned to expect from Professor Hanke. Particularly commendable is the balanced presentation of topics on which we are accustomed to hear clichés, such as the Cuban Revolution. Pungent quotations from a variety of unofficial sources, including literary works like Carlos Fuentes' Where the Air Is Clear, enliven the text. Each chapter is accompanied by a bibliography which demonstrates the author's close scrutiny of the growing body of writings on contemporary Latin America. If the second section, composed of readings, makes a less happy impression, the fault is not Professor Hanke's. The fact is that much that has and is being written about contemporary Latin America, both in this country and to the South, has a peculiarly insubstantial nature. How insubstantial and evanescent becomes clear when a judgment on a given Latin American government or problem is reread ten years later. As one who has also struggled with this problem of selecting suitable contemporary material for an anthology, I am sympathetic with Professor Hanke's quandary. Early in the book we are shown a photograph of a smiling Richard Nixon and an equally ebullient Generalissimo Trujillo sharing a "warm abrazo" in 1960. Should we attach a special political significance to this heart-warming picture? -- Benjamin Keen, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois." --
