Little has been written about the practical considerations for reforming schools from the inside. This booklet explores how people responsible for schools can develop better relationships, new forms of colleagueship, and new ways of working together more productively. Three aphorisms describe the phenomenon of faculty-led school improvement: (1) taking a trip without a roadmap; (2) rebuilding the airplane while in flight; and (3) rediscovering the "if it's not local, it's not real" adage. To restructure education effectively, educators must foster the dynamics of group functioning and build an environment in which research-proven teaching methodologies promoting positive student interaction can flourish. Cooperation and collaboration are often hampered when groups of teachers and students are asked to work together without using group building activities, which incorporate heterogeneous grouping, positive interdependence, group reward, and individual accountability. Four chapters discuss specific group builders to enhance positive interactions between administrators and teachers, among teachers, and among both younger and older students. The last chapter discusses approaches to assessing the outcomes of the interactive process. Numerous sources for group-building activities are included, along with a selected bibliography of 35 references. (MLH)

This monograph addresses the challenge of improving literacy learning for all children, especially those in language-minority classrooms. The monograph introduces some of these classrooms in detail, examining and describing their literacy practices and setting forth some of the principles of learning and language that underlie them. It is the result of long-term collaboration between a classroom teacher and a university researcher, and provides a model for university-school collaboration. The monograph sets the stage for future collaborations between practitioners and researchers that can suggest new and creative ways to improve school-based literacy learning. Special attention is focused on the following: cultural and linguistic differences; inside the classroom; writing, learning, and the teacher's role; literate behavior and literacy skills; and building theory and practice together. The 1976 general revision of the United States copyright law (Public Law 94-553) sets limits on what copyrighted materials may be copied, under what conditions, and for what purposes. This handbook presents some highlights of the new law that are of particular interest to teachers and librarians and responds to questions that teachers and librarians have raised about it. The book examines the background and meaning of the new law; describes the "fair use" provision that permits teachers, librarians, researchers, scholars, and others to use copyrighted works without paying the copyright holder; provides guidelines for classroom copying of copyrighted materials; tells how the law applies to uses of educational media and technology, including off-the-air taping of television and radio programs; discusses library copying; and explains the provision that protects a teacher or librarian who has innocently infringed copyrighted material. The basic assumption of this book is that reading and writing in school should be natural and enjoyable for children, and its ideas are based on the Piagetian theory that knowledge is constructed by each individual and the psycholinguistic view that learning takes place best when viewed as holistic and when instructional materials for children are authentic and purposeful. The book describes the constructive nature of children's thinking, reading, and writing, and the natural development of these processes. Chapter 1 discusses a model of literacy learning and the role of teachers in creating sound literacy programs for their pupils. Chapters 2 and 3 present instructional ideas that support the literacy development of middle grade students. Chapter two centers on developing readers; some of the topics covered include reading aloud, literature sets, reading conferences, book talks, strategy lessons, and reading journals and logs. Chapter 3 focuses on developing writers and discusses various aspects of the writing workshop, writing outside the workshop, and assessment of writing--only those ideas which are consistent with a whole language view of literacy development have been included. Chapter 4 comments on specific questions about the whole language approach to reading and writing. Appendixes list publishers of students' writing, selected favorite books, selected poetry collections, and some discourse forms for content writing.
