Originally published in 1968, these ten essays by one of Europe's leading sociological theorists deal with important issues on the borderline between sociology and social philosophy and demonstrate the author's deep insight into history and political analysis. The author maintains that the structures of power in which the political process takes place not only originate change and give it direction, but also produce the fertile conflicts that give expression to the fundamental uncertainty of human existence. Through an examination of various concepts inherent in this dynamic process - power, resistance, conflict, change, freedom, uncertainty - a coherent theory of society emerges

LSE : a history of the London School of Economics and Political Science, 1895-1995 by
Ralf Dahrendorf(
Book
)
21 editions published between 1995 and 2007 in English and Spanish and held by 566 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The London School of Economics and Political Science - the LSE - is one of the most famous academic institutions in the world. This history provides a lively account of the first century of a university which, from its beginnings, has captured not only the minds of social scientists but also the imagination of a wider public. It is the biography of an institution written by an author who was closely involved as a student and later as Director of the School and who remains deeply attached to it. The book places the School in the context of the drama of the twentieth century and it does so through a mirror, the mirror of the social sciences. Lord Dahrendorf traces the story of the LSE from its 'invention' by Beatrice and Sidney Webb, George Bernard Shaw, and Graham Wallas at a breakfast in August 1894, through its foundation in 1895, the travails of its early years, the triumphs of the Beveridge era between the wars, the great expansion of the post-war period, and the changing moods of the succeeding decades, including the 'troubles' of 1968. The individuals and the events of the LSE's century of existence have been memorable, yet the School has always been more than the sum of its parts. Its base is London, and its home the world

Homo sociologicus : ein Versuch zur Geschichte, Bedeutung und Kritik der Kategorie der sozialen Rolle by
Ralf Dahrendorf(
Book
)
70 editions published between 1959 and 2006 in 4 languages and held by 509 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On Britain by
Ralf Dahrendorf(
Book
)
20 editions published between 1982 and 1984 in 3 languages and held by 507 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Britain is in decline -or is it? Like every other developed country, Britain is up against vexing economic and political problems. Unlike others, Britain seems to pay a price for its own, very special history: the burden of having invented the Industrial Revolution; the Empire and its loss; the conflicts of class and of race. One can understand those who fear for the country's future. But there is a different point of view. Britain derives strenghts as well as weaknesses from the past, and has every potential to make a real contribution to the maintenance of liberty in tomorrow's world. In this book, keyed to the television series on the subject, Ralf Dahrendorf, Director of the London School of Economics, a distinguished German academic and political figure, and a didicated but not uncritical Anglophile, analyses the past: the achievements and the failures; the dilemmas of class, of the Westminster system, of Europe; the things that make Britain a good country to live in and those that make thousands leave every year. He goes on to offer some ideas for the future that not only make sense, but stand a chance of success: electoral reform; a Bill of Rights; a national forum to ponder whiter the economy; above all, perhaps, a longer-term perspective which builds on the strengths of Britain's tradition. Challenging, controversial, accessible, the argument of this book should help raise the level of debate about Britain's future and direct it to positive answers rather than gloom and doom. -4e de couv

Freedom for publishing, publishing for freedom : the Central and East European Publishing Project by
Timothy Garton Ash(
)
9 editions published in 1995 in English and and held by 497 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The Oxford-based Central and East European Publishing Project was a remarkable initiative to support embattled Central and East European publishers and journals, and to punch holes through the cultural iron curtain by encouraging translations and a 'common market of the mind' between East and West. The nine years of its existence straddle the largest watershed in European history since 1945, and the Project's history - told here by some of its leading participants - illuminates the nature of the recent changes in Central and Eastern Europe." "In a vivid personal account, Timothy Garton Ash recalls the work of the Project, ranging from smuggling in subsidies to underground journals and samizdat publishers in the pre-1989 period to supporting high-quality translations and East-West workshops in the period after 1989. Also included are an Introduction in which Ralf Dahrendorf, Chairman of the Project, reflects on the importance of both publishing and foundations for a healthy civil society; an annotated catalogue of the Project's work, prepared by Elizabeth Winter; and a detailed and original report by Richard Davy on the state of publishing in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, with suggestions for further Western help."--Jacket

After 1989 : morals, revolution, and civil society by
Ralf Dahrendorf(
Book
)
26 editions published between 1988 and 1997 in English and held by 474 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The lectures collected in this volume are a thoughtful and lively commentary on Europe after the revolution of 1989. Must revolutions fail? Certainly, the open society has its own problems, not least that of citizens in search of meaning. The Good Society has to square the circle of prosperity, civility and liberty. Social science can help us understand what needs to be done, and intellectuals have a responsibility to initiate and accompany change. All this raises questions for Europe which extend far beyond the all too narrow confines of the European Union

Reflections on the revolution in Europe : in a letter intended to have been sent to a gentleman in Warsaw by
Ralf Dahrendorf(
Book
)
14 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 426 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 effectively ended the division of Europe into East and West, and the features of our world that have resulted bear little resemblance to those of the forty years that preceded the Wall's fall. The rise of a new Europe prompts many questions, most of which remain to be answered. What does it all mean? Where is it going to lead? Are we witnessing the conclusion of an era without seeing anything to replace an old and admittedly dismal way of life? What will a market economy do to the social texture of various countries of Central Europe? Will it not make some rich while many will become poorer than ever? How can the rule of law be brought about? In this incisive and lucid book, Ralf Dahrendorf, one of Europe's most distinguished scholars, ponders these and other equally vexing questions. He regards what has happened in East Central Europe as a victory for neither of the social systems that once opposed each other across the Iron Curtain. Rather, he views these events as a vote for an open society over a closed society. The continuing conundrum, he argues, which will plague peoples everywhere, will be how to balance the need for economic growth with the desire for social justice while building authentic and enduring democratic institutions. Reflections on the Revolution in Europe, which includes a new introduction from the author, is a humane, skeptical, and anti-utopian work, a manifesto for a radical liberalism in which the social entitlements of citizenship are as important a condition of progress as the opportunities for choice. A fascinating study of change and geopolitics in the modern world, Reflections points the way towards a new politics for the twenty-first century. Ralf Dahrendorf, born in Hamburg, Germany in 1929, is a member of Britain's House of Lords. He was professor of sociology at Hamburg, Tobingen and Konstanz from 1957 to 1968, and in 1974 moved to Britain
