The revolution betrayed : what is the Soviet Union and where is it going? by Leon Trotsky( Book )

165 editions published between 1032 and 2013 in 9 languages and held by 1,713 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The bourgeois world at first tried to pretend not to notice the economic successes of the soviet regime -- the experimental proof, that is, of the practicability of socialist methods. The learned economists of capital still often try to maintain a deeply cogitative silence about the unprecedented tempo of Russiaʹs industrial development, or confine themselves to remarks about an extreme "exploitation of the peasantry". They are missing a wonderful opportunity to explain why the brutal exploitation of the peasants in China, for instance, or Japan, or India, never produced an industrial tempo remotely approaching that of the Soviet Union. Facts win out, however, in the end. The bookstalls of all civilized countries are now loaded with books about the Soviet Union. It is no wonder; such prodigies are rare. The literature dictated by blind reactionary hatred is fast dwindling. A noticeable proportion o the newest works on the Soviet Union adopt a favorable, if not even a rapturous, tone. As a sign of the improving international reputation of the parvenu state, this abundance of pro-soviet literature can only be welcomed. Moreover, it is incomparably better to idealize the Soviet Union than fascist Italy. The reader, however, would seek in vain on the pages of this literature for a scientific appraisal of what is actually taking place in the land of the October revolution. -- Description from http://www.marxists.org/archive/trotsky/1936/revbet/intro.htm (April 12, 2012)
1905 by Leon Trotsky( Book )

91 editions published between 1922 and 2016 in 6 languages and held by 1,240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In January of 1905, thousands of Russian workers, led by a priest on the payroll of the Tsar himself, marched to the gates of the Winter Palace with the intention of humbly petitioning their ruler for an eight hour work day. They were met by an intransigent detachment of royal guards who opened fire, killing hundreds of demonstrators. This massacre was the spark that set off an uprising that would shake the Russian Empire to its very foundation before the year's end. At the very center of this movement stood the newly created Soviet of Workers Deputies. Formed to coordinate the wave of mass strikes that stretched from St. Petersburg to Warsaw, this council became the de-facto voice of Russia's revolutionary workers, who chose Leon Trotsky as their elected leader. 1905 is Leon Trotsky's account of these events. With his characteristic combination of elegant, beautifully written narrative and incisive, insightful analysis, Trotsky's book-despite long being out of print-has remained the central point of reference for those looking to understand the rising of workers, peasants, and soldiers that would later become known as the Great Dress Rehearsal.' Originally written in 1908 for revolutionaries in and outside of Russia to better understand the dynamics and forces at play in order to better apply them to their own circumstances, this new edition reclaims these lessons for today's radicals

"Our book," Trotsky writes, "teaches not how to love a victorious revolution in the person of the bureaucracy it has brought forward, but only how the revolution is prepared, how it develops, and how it conquers." Now, forty years after the event, this books assumes a new meaning in the light of recent developments within the Soviet orbit

"Written in the white heat of revolutionary Russia's Civil War, Trotsky's Terrorism and Communism is one of the most potent defenses of revolutionary dictatorship. In his provocative commentary to this new edition the philosopher Slavoj Žižek argues that Trotsky's attack on the illusions of liberal democracy has a vital relevance today"--

"Leon Trotsky was a key political figure of the twentieth century - a leader of the Russian Revolution, founder of the Red Army, author of books on literature, history, morality and politics. Leon Trotsky: Writings in Exile contains some of his most insightful and penetrating works. Exiled and isolated by Stalin, Trotsky used the only weapon he had left - words. In these writings he defends the 1917 revolution, warns prophetically of fascism and analyses anti-colonial movements in the global south. This collection gives a sense of the real Trotsky - passionate, humanist, Marxist. It will introduce the writings of one of history's great revolutionaries to a new generation."--Publisher's website
Trotsky's diary in exile, 1935 by Leon Trotsky( Book )

35 editions published between 1958 and 1976 in English and Undetermined and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This diary of the exiled Trotsky is a powerfully evocative fragment of history and human personality... Written in France and Norway, it gives the day-to-day reflections of a fallen leader, of one who has wielded power and was now in an exceptional position to observe it in the hands of others. Naturally there are penetrating comments here on local and international politics, often timeless in their relevance, but with them comes admission to the private world of the revolutionary intellectual. Here Trotsky lived with anguish, was beset by loneliness, and sustained himself by pride and fanaticism"--
Leon Trotsky by Paul Le Blanc( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The name 'Leon Trotsky' is a controversial one. For some, he was a betrayer or a totalitarian. For others, he was a revolutionary knight battling an oppressive system. However you view him, Trotsky was a one of the most important figures of twentieth-century Communism. A leader of the 1917 Bolshevik insurrection in Russia, he organized and led the Red Army to victory in the Russian Civil War - but was challenged and eventually defeated by his rival Joseph Stalin. Trotsky lived the rest of his life in exile until Stalin finally had him killed. In Leon Trotsky, Paul Le Blanc delves deep to understand Trotsky's complex character, relationships, actions and ideas. Interweaving dramatic historical events with Trotsky's multi-faceted personality, this book explores his involvement with and opposition to the Soviet bureaucracy, and his efforts to revitalize the revolutionary wing of the labour movement. Revealed here are his urgent warnings of Hitler's rise and the spread of fascism, his penetrating understanding of the French Popular Front and the Spanish Civil War, and his analysis of the ominous beginnings of the Second World War. Throughout, Trotsky remained animated by the early ideals of the Communist tradition. Drawing from a rich array of sources, Le Blanc offers a balanced portrait of Trotsky in a historical context that will be invaluable for students, scholars or anyone with an interest in political history and extraordinary lives
The social and political thought of Leon Trotsky by Baruch Knei-Paz( Book )

1 edition published in 1979 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the first comprehensive exposition and critical analysis of Trotsky's social and political ideas. Eschewing the polemics which have characterized so much of the literature on Trotsky, but not abandoning the critical approach, the author shows that Trotsky's was the most far-reaching and original of theoretical attempts to deal with the relationship between Marxism and the Social-Democratic movement on the one hand and backwardness and the problems of pre-industrial or underdeveloped society on the other. The author also deals in detail with the problem of why Trotsky, once a violent opponent of Bolshevism, later became one of its most ardent supporters and, indeed, leaders. This book is, therefore, as much a study of the Russian Revolution as of the ideas of one man. [Back cover]
