"Covering societies from classical times to the twenty-first century, Gender in World History is a fascinating exploration of what happens to established ideas about men, women, and gender roles when different cultural systems come into contact. Now in its third edition, the book has been thoroughly updated, including: expanded treatment of Africa under Islamic influence; expanded discussion of southeast Asia; a new chapter on contemporary Latin America; representations of individual women; and engagement with recent work on gender history and theory. With truly global coverage, this book enables students to understand how gender roles have varied across the world and over time, and the vital role of gender in structuring social and political relationships." -- Provided by publisher

16 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and held by 2,781 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The nineteenth and twentieth centuries saw a dramatic shift in the role of children in American society and families. No longer necessary for labor, children became economic liabilities and twentieth-century parents exhibited a new level of anxiety concerning the welfare of their children and their own ability to parent effectively. What caused this shift in the ways parenting and childhood were experienced and perceived? Why, at a time of relative ease and prosperity, do parents continue to grapple with uncertainty and with unreasonable expectations of both themselves and their children?. Pet

The industrial revolution in world history by Peter N Stearns( Book )

53 editions published between 1993 and 2019 in English and held by 2,117 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The industrial revolution is generally recognized as a major development in world history. Even so, the study of it is routinely handled as simply part of Western European history or as part of individual national histories. Peter Stearns offers a genuinely world-historical approach, looking at the international factors that touched off the industrial revolution and at its global spread and impact. Stearns begins with an examination of industrialization in the West, but he also treats later cases in other societies - including Russia, Japan, and the United States - providing the comparative analysis usually lacking in single-nation treatments. Although Stearns defines the essence of industrialization in terms of technology and economic organization, he pays substantial attention to larger social results, especially changes in the experience of work and shifts in family functions and gender roles. The Industrial Revolution in World History seeks to build on recent scholarly advances to include more fully international and more human views in our understanding of the industrial revolution. This book will be particularly useful for students of world history and economics as well as for those seeking to know more about the global implications of what is arguably the defining socioeconomic event of modern times

Such questions are now being addressed by historians who trace how emotions have been expressed and understood in different cultures throughout history. Doing Emotions History explores the history of feelings such as love, joy, grief, nostalgia as well as a wide range of others, bringing together the latest and most innovative scholarship on the history of the emotions. Spanning the globe from Asia and Europe to North America, the book provides a crucial overview of this emerging discipline. An international group of scholars reviews the field's current status and variations, addresses many of its central debates, provides models and methods, and proposes an array of possibilities for future research. Yet the 20th century also offers notable examples of large-scale demilitarization, both imposed and voluntary. This work fills a key gap in current historical understanding by examining demilitarization programs in Germany, Japan, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Costa Rica
Growing up : the history of childhood in a global context by Peter N Stearns( )

7 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 1,259 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Growing Up combines two flourishing historical fields-the history of childhood and world history-to address the question of how much of childhood is natural and how much is historically determined. The first lecture gauges the impact of the development of agriculture, civilization, and religion upon the premodern experience of childhood. The second lecture contrasts modern perspectives on childhood with more traditional ones before investigating how and why modern perspectives developed and spread. These lectures clearly demonstrate that the transformation of childhood is both recent and sweep."--Publisher's description

Satisfaction not guaranteed : dilemmas of progress in modern society by Peter N Stearns( )

11 editions published between 2011 and 2016 in English and held by 1,018 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Our satisfaction should be guaranteed. Modernity's blessings are many and bountiful. Many affluent societies have vanquished the great plagues of earlier generations: in the West, food shortages are nearly eliminated, infant and maternal mortality has fallen dramatically, birth control is both readily available and effective, education levels are higher, and internal violence is significantly reduced. But are we really happy? In Satisfaction Not Guaranteed, Peter N. Stearns examines why the gains of living in modern urban, industrial, affluent societies have not proved more satisfying than they have. If modern life has been filled with measurable progress, abundance, and improvement, why are people not happier or more content with their lot in life? Why do we suffer more than ever from psychological depression, anxiety, and the sense that no one has ever reached a pinnacle of happiness or contentment? And is there a way out? Can we truly be happy in the modern world? -- from dust jacket
American behavioral history : an introduction by Peter N Stearns( )

10 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 989 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From his founding of "The Journal of Social History" to his groundbreaking work on the history of emotions, weight, and parenting, Peter N. Stearns has pushed the boundaries of social history to new levels, presenting new insights into how people have lived and thought through the ages. Having established the history of emotions as a major subfield of social history, Stearns and his collaborators are poised to do the same thing with the study of human behavior. This is their manifesto. "American Behavioral History" deals with specific uses of historical data and analysis to illuminate American behavior patterns, ranging from car buying rituals to sexuality, and from funeral practices to contemporary grandparenting. The anthology illustrates the advantages and parameters of analyzing the ways in which people behave, and adds significantly to our social understanding while developing innovative methods for historical teaching and research. At its core, the collection demonstrates how the study of the past can be directly used to understand current behaviors in the United States. Throughout, contributors discuss not only specific behavioral patterns but, importantly, how to consider a
