Cézanne : landscape into art by
Pavel Machotka(
Book
)
7 editions published between 1996 and 2014 in English and held by 950 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book presents a new perspective on Paul Cezanne, one of the towering and most influential figures on nineteenth-century art. Pavel Machotka has photographed the sites of Cezanne's landscape painting, whenever possible, from the same spot and at the same time of day that Cezanne painted the scenes. While there are other books on Cezanne's landscapes, none is as closely informed by painterly knowledge and perception or as complete in its grasp of Cezanne's period and geography as the one

Cézanne in Provence by
Philip Conisbee(
Book
)
21 editions published in 2006 in 3 languages and held by 776 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Published on the centenary of the death of Paul Cézanne (18391906), this stunning book celebrates the artist's depictions of his native Provence. While Cézanne is recognized as one of the fathers of the modern movement, this publication focuses on his own sense of achievement, especially as a painter exploring the landscape in and around his hometown of Aix-en- Provence. Although he spent time elsewhere in France, especially Paris, Cézanne repeatedly returned to Provence, where he lived nearly all of the last twenty years of his life. In studios at the Jas de Bouffan and at Les Lauves, and on painting expeditions into the surrounding countryside, Cézanne created some of his most original and compelling works, not only landscapes but also portraits of local characters, friends, and family; still lifes, and imaginative figure paintings, such as the monumental bathers painted in the last decade of his life. Beautifully illustrated with some 160 paintings and watercolors, Cézanne in Provence offers fascinating insights into a true genius in the history of art and his beloved native countryside

"The famous proclamation that Cezanne "is the father of us all" has been attributed to both Matisse and Picasso, and his influence has extended to a great diversity of artists thereafter. In this monumental book, a team of distinguished scholars offers the most comprehensive view to date on Cezanne's vital role in shaping European and American art throughout the 20th century and into the 21st. More than forty paintings and ten works on paper by Cezanne-many of his best-known and most admired-are juxtaposed throughout the catalogue with approximately 120 works by a range of modern and contemporary artists who found in Cezanne a central inspiration. They include Max Beckmann, Georges Braque, Charles Demuth, Alberto Giacometti, Arshile Gorky, Marsden Hartley, Fernand Leger, Brice Marden, Piet Mondrian, Giorgio Morandi, Liubov Popova, and Jeff Wall, as well as Picasso, Matisse, Johns, and Kelly. The essays offer insights into the "conversation" between Cezanne and each of these other artists, who stand on a par with his greatness. Among its many features, this book contains conceptual overviews by Richard Shiff and Robert Storr as well as an illustrated chronology."--Publisher description

Cézanne : the self-portraits by
Steven Platzman(
Book
)
7 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 732 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Cezanne has long been celebrated as the founding father of modern art. But astonishingly there has never been a study devoted to his self-portraits. Now, for the first time, Steven Platzman reveals the remarkable light these haunting works throw on the artist and his era." "Platzman begins with the young Cezanne struggling to make his mark in the Parisian art world of the 1860s. His earliest self-portraits express all the hostility he projected at both the official Salon and the avant-garde in these years. By the early 1870s, however, he found himself deeply isolated: military defeat and revolutionary upheaval had produced a conservative backlash throughout French political and cultural life. Cezanne responded by seeking rapproachement with the avant-garde, joining Camille Pissarro at Pontoise and temporarily adopting Impressionist technique. His self-portraits depict a more sober and accommodating figure, often sporting the rough-and-ready outdoor attire of the plein air Impressionist painter." "Like Rembrandt, Cezanne also inserted his own image into narrative paintings, in particular a series of often luridly erotic scenes from the late 1860s and 1870s. The femme fatale makes a regular appearance in these works, threatening - but always failing - to entice him from the paths of art and virtue." "By his final years Cezanne's self-portraits communicate a quieter spirit of introspection and skepticism that was very much in tune with the Symbolist mood of the times. These works are also, finally, serene and magisterial, depicting a man who, despite the doubts that never left him, had seen his aesthetic path and was sworn to pursue it till the day he died." "Cezanne: The Self-Portraits is a study of the nineteenth century's greatest painter. Accessible, authoritative, and generously illustrated, it concludes with a definitive catalog of all Cezanne's painted and drawn self-portraits."--Jacket

Cézanne and American modernism by
Paul Cézanne(
Book
)
10 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 697 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) is one of the great geniuses in the history of art, and his work has influenced a multitude of artists throughout Europe. Across the Atlantic, Cezanne's paintings had a similarly catalytic effect on artists emerging in the United States during the early twentieth century. Cezanne and American Modernism is the first book devoted specifically to Cezanne's impact on American art and his works' enthusiastic reception there. It shows how American painters and photographers cemented his legacy by spreading their respect and admiration for his vision with their own art, writings, and exhibitions." "Examining Cezanne's influence on more than a generation of American artists, this illustrated book features paintings and photography by Marsden Hartley, Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz, Charles Demuth, Arshile Gorky, Paul Strand, Charles Sheeler, Stanton Macdonald-Wright, Maurice Prendergast, Morgan Russell, Max Weber, and many others. Cezanne's transformative impact on each artist's aesthetic vision is explored, while extensive essays shed new light on a wide range of subjects, from American collectors of his work and his shaping of modernism in the American West to the lasting resonance of his art on Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s."--Jacket

Cézanne's watercolors : between drawing and painting by
Matthew Thomas Simms(
Book
)
4 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 669 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Cezanne's watercolours exhibit not only kaleidoscopic arrays of translucence but also very light graphite pencil lines that contrast strikingly with the soft watery touches of colour. These drawn lines have been largely overlooked in previous studies of Cezanne's work in this medium. In this ravishing book, Matthew Simms argues that it was the dialogue between drawing and painting - the movement between pencil and paintbrush - that attracted Cezanne to watercolour. The technique allowed Cezanne to express what he termed his "sensations" in two distinct modes that become a record of his shifting and spontaneous responses to his subject. Combining close visual analysis and examination of historical context, Simms focuses on the counterpoint of drawing and colour in Cezanne's work over the course of his career and as viewed in relation to his oil paintings. More than a tool for sketching or preparing for oil paintings, Simms contends, watercolour was a unique means of expression in its own right that allowed Cezanne to combine in one place the two otherwise opposed mediums of drawing and painting

With his distinctive paintings of landscapes, figures and still lifes, Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) profoundly influenced the direction of early twentieth-century art. In this vivid account, Mary Tompkins Lewis traces Cezanne's life and work from his early years in Aix-en-Provence struggling to become a painter in the face of self-doubt and paternal opposition, through his time in Paris where he studied the Old Masters while immersing himself in Impressionism, to his later, reclusive years back in Provence, when he fused the ideals of the past and present in paintings that made him the precursor of a new art

Cézanne in Philadelphia collections by
Joseph J Rishel(

8 editions published in 1983 in English and Undetermined and held by 408 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
For anyone seriously interested in the works of Paul Cézanne, Philadelphia is one of the primary pilgrimage sites. At or near the Philadelphia Museum of Art, one finds a marvelous concentration of Cézannes from all periods--portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and figures--that cover the major themes of his artistic life. This book catalogues a major exhibition celebrating Cézanne in Philadelphia. Forty-four works are included, representing among them the subjects to which he returned throughout his career. Views of his native Provence include a group of watercolors and late paintings on the monumental theme of Mont Sainte-Victoire. Three portraits of his wife executed over a ten-year period show a remarkable range in handling and expression. Four drawings that have never been published--including one of his son that is newly discovered--are also featured. The culmination of the exhibition and book is the huge canvas of "The Large Bathers" on which Cézanne was working when he died. Together with the other major variations on that theme in the National Gallery, London, and the Barnes Foundation in suburban Philadelphia, it stands as his most ambitious and stately achievement. Cézanne in Philadelphia Collections gives those interested in painting the opportunity to experience a valuable and very generous cross-section of the work of one of the world's most influential artists. It also reaffirms the remarkable resources of fine art that exist in Philadelphia. -- Back cover
