The Shaker herb and garden book by Rita Buchanan( Book )

2 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 249 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In a brief history, Buchanan posits that to many people, Shaker refers to a style of furniture, but that Shakerism was first a religion and then a way of life. The Shakers were especially successful as gardeners; not only did they produce their own food, they developed a major business selling vegetable seeds and medicinal herbs. Quoting extensively from The Gardener's Manual, published in 1635, the author describes their approach to gardening as one that 'combines science, religion, and inspiration.' They placed an emphasis on meticulous weeding, neatness, proper tools, fertile soil, written records, and growing only essential crops (not ornamental plants). Buchanan applies these ideas for today's gardeners with chapters on growing vegetables (and producing vegetable seeds) and herbs (with an overview of the Shaker medicinal herb industry and a sampler of Shaker herbs). A charming book combining history and gardening and filled with color photographs. - George Cohen-

Gather up the fragments : the Andrews Shaker collection by Mario S De Pillis( Book )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For almost 70 years, the Shaker scholar-collectors Edward Deming Andrews and Faith Young Andrews worked to "gather up the fragments" of Shaker Culture. They energetically collected objects, studies sources, mounted exhibitions, and published books on Shaker culture." "This book comprehensively presents the Andrewses' story for the first time. Essays by Mario S. De Pillis and Christian Goodwillie provide a history of the collection and recount the couple's relations with the Shakers and with important New York City art-world figures of the 1930s. Drawing on many new manuscript sources, as well as oral histories, recollections, field notes, newly discovered letters and diaries, and over 600 photographs, most never before published, De Pillis and Goodwillie have broken new ground in telling the fascinating story of the birth of a field of study."--Jacket
