The earth, the temple, and the gods; Greek sacred architecture by
Vincent Scully(
Book
)
52 editions published between 1962 and 2014 in English and held by 1,741 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
When The Earth, the Temple, and the Gods first appeared in 1962, it was hailed by the critics for its erudition, historical imagination, and boldness. Subsequently, this comprehensive study of Greek temples and site-planning has been widely accepted as a landmark of architectural history, for it offers an inspired and arresting insight into the nature and function of Greek sacred architecture. Vincent Scully, one of America's most brilliant and articulate scholars, understands the temples as physical embodiments of the gods in landscapes that had for the Greeks divine attributes and sacred connotations. He explores the meanings inherent in the calculated interaction between manmade sculptural forces and the natural landscape, and he relates this interaction to our understanding of Greek culture from the pre-Greek Aegean to the Hellenistic period. Years of research and travel were devoted to this book. Scores of sites were restudied on the spot, including many lesser-known sanctuaries throughout the Hellenic world. The study includes reconstruction drawings, plans, and maps along with its richly illustrated, detailed discussions of major sites. The 1969 revised edition, in which Professor Scully expanded the text and enriched it with the fruit of new researches and writings, is here made newly available. -- from book cover

Maya Lin : a strong clear vision(
Visual
)
9 editions published between 1994 and 2010 in English and held by 1,348 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This Academy Award winner reveals the contentious origins of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and tells the inspiring story of its creator, a 21-year-old Yale architecture student. Beating out some of the most prestigious architecture films from around the world, Lin's plan was selected from over 1,000 different designs, a giant victory for such a young and unknown artist. But little did Maya Lin know that her battle was just beginning. In Washington to defend her design, Lin came up against a mighty opposition, challenging indignant veterans and a hostile Congress to ultimately prevail with her emotional 'Wall.' And what began as one of the country's most bitterly disputed public monuments became one of the world's inspirational and frequently visited memorials. In this riveting and dramatic portrait, renowned filmmaker Freida Lee Mock combines interviews and archival footage to chronicle Lin's story -- from its origins, dominated by her David vs. Goliath battle over the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, to a career designing other memorials, always with an innate talent, and resolute courage."--Back of container

The vast and beautiful landscape of the American Southwest has long haunted artists and writers seeking to understand the mysteries of the deep affinity between the land and the Native Americans who have lived on it for centuries. In this pioneering study, art historian Vincent Scully explores the inhabitants' understanding of the natural world in an entirely original way--by observing and analyzing the complex yet visible relationships between the landscape of mountain and desert, the ancient ruins and the pueblos, and the ceremonial dances that take place with them

The shingle style and the stick style : architectural theory and design from Richardson to the origins of Wright by
Vincent Scully(
Book
)
26 editions published between 1971 and 1993 in English and held by 957 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book has been widely acclaimed as the definitive study of the complex inspirations and cultural influences that were fused in the Shingle Style of wooden suburban and resort buildings of the period 1872 to 1889. Vincent Scully presents the published designs and the written statements of the architects, as well as contemporary criticisms of the buildings to analyze the development of the Shingle Style from Richardson's early work to Wright's first house in Oak Park. An analysis of the Colonial Revival is central to the work, which is now enhanced by the addition of an extensive related chapter on the Stick Style of the mid-century. A new preface has been added, and the bibliography and footnotes have been updated."--Page 4 of cover

The new urbanism : toward an architecture of community by
Peter Katz(
Book
)
11 editions published between 1993 and 1996 in English and held by 928 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
New Urbanism addresses many of the critical issues of our time: the decline of America's cities, the rebuilding of its crumbling infrastructure, housing affordability, crime and traffic congestion. Proponents suggest alternatives to the present sprawl and isolation they see as the consequence of decades of poorly planned suburban growth. The designs of New Urbanism integrate housing, shops, workplaces, parks and civic facilities into close-knit communities that are both charming and functional. Walkabiity is key, but cars aren't excluded. The book presents 24 case study projects that offer simple yet compelling solutions to many frequently encountered planning problems

Modern architecture and other essays by
Vincent Scully(
Book
)
15 editions published between 2002 and 2005 in English and held by 877 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This extensively illustrated and elegantly designed volume distills Vincent Scully's incalculable contribution. Neil Levine, a former student of Scully's, has selected twenty essays that reveal the breadth and depth of Scully's work from the 1950s through the 1990s. The pieces are included for their singular contribution to our understanding of modern architecture as well as their relative unavailability to current readers. Levine offers a perceptive overview of Scully's distinguished career and introduces each essay, skillfully setting the scholarly and cultural scene. The selections address almost all of modern architecture's major themes and together go a long way toward defining what constitutes the contemporary experience of architecture and urbanism. Each is characteristically Scully - provocative, precise in detail and observation, and written with passionate clarity. They document Scully's seminal views on the relationship between the natural and the built environment and trace his progressively intense concern with the fabric of the street and of our communities. The essays also highlight Scully's engagement with the careers of so many of the twentieth century's most significant architects, from Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier to Louis Kahn and Robert Venturi."--Jacket
