Utopia by Thomas More ( Book )
987 editions published between 1516 and 2014 in 25 languages and held by 16,202 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
First published in 1516, Saint Thomas More's Utopia is one of the most important works of European humanism. Through the voice of the mysterious traveler Raphael Hythloday, More describes a pagan, communist city-state governed by reason. Addressing such issues as religious pluralism, women's rights, state-sponsored education, colonialism, and justified warfare, Utopia seems remarkably contemporary nearly five centuries after it was written, and it remains a foundational text in philosophy and political theory. Preeminent More scholar Clarence H. Miller does justice to the full range of More's rhetoric in this new translation. Professor Miller includes a helpful introduction that outlines some of the important problems and issues that Utopia raises, and also provides informative commentary to assist the reader throughout this challenging and rewarding exploration of the meaning of political community. This book is Thomas More's masterpiece. With the help of Shakespeare, whose Richard the Third took More's work as its principal model, the History determined the historical reputation of an English king and spawned a seemingly endless controversy about the justness of that reputation. Logan has produced a scholarly yet accessible edition designed to make More's exhilarating work fully accessible to modern readers. The text is preceded by a general introduction, a chronology, and suggestions for further reading. An appendix reprints passages from key sources and analogues, enabling the reade

Based upon Machiavelli's first-hand experience as an emissary of the Florentine Republic to the courts of Europe, The Prince analyses the usually violent means by which men seize, retain, and lose political power. This fluent new translation is accompanied by comprehensive notes and an introduction that dispels some of the myths associated with Machiavelli, and considers the true purpose of The Prince. - ;'A prince must not have any other object nor any other thought...but war, its institutions, and its discipline; because that is the only art befitting one who commands.'. Utopia : Latin text and an English translation by Thomas More ( Book )
13 editions published between 1994 and 2006 in English and held by 292 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"First published in Latin in 1516, Thomas More's Utopia is one of the most influential books in the Western philosophical and literary tradition and one of the supreme achievements of Renaissance humanism. This is the first edition of Utopia since 1965 (the Yale edition) to combine More's Latin text with an English translation, and also the first edition to provide a Latin text that is at once accurate and readable. The text is based on the early editions (with the Froben edition of March 1518 as copy-text), but spelling and punctuation have been regularised in accordance with modern practices. The translation is a revised version of the acclaimed Adams translation, which also appears in Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought. The edition, which incorporates the results of recent Utopian scholarship, includes an introduction, textual apparatus, a full commentary and a guide to the voluminous scholarly and critical literature on Utopia."--Jacket
