Professor Taylor's biography provides the best short life of the world's greatest philosopher and an excellent introduction to Socratic thought. The author reveals Socrates as "the man who created the intellectual and moral tradition by which Europe has ever since lived" and he presents him in all his fullness as "an original genius in whose character there was a unique blend of the passionate lover, the religious mystic, the eager rationalist, and the humorist."

Philebus by Plato( Book )

22 editions published between 1956 and 1972 in English and held by 504 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In The Tragedy and Comedy of Life, Seth Benardete focuses on the idea of the good in what is widely regarded as one of Plato's most challenging and complex dialogues, the Philebus. Traditionally the Philebus is interpreted as affirming the doctrine that the good resides in thought and mind rather than in pleasure or the body. Benardete challenges this view, arguing that Socrates vindicates the life of the mind over against the life of pleasure not by separating the two and advocating a strict asceticism, but by mixing pleasure and pain with mind in such a way that the philosophic life emerges as the only possible human life. Benardete combines a probing and challenging commentary that subtly mirrors and illumines the complexities of this dialogue with the finest English translation of the Philebus yet available. The result is a work that will be of great value to classicists, philosophers, and political theorists alike

Though criticized in some detail by Aristotle in the "Politics", it undoubtedly exercised a profound influence upon his thought, and through him upon subsequent political theory
Plato by A. E Taylor( Book )

40 editions published between 1900 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 348 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book provides an introduction to Plato's work that gives a clear statement of what Plato has to say about the problems of thought and life. In particular, it tells the reader just what Plato says, and makes no attempt to force a system on the Platonic text or to trim Plato's works to suit contemporary philosophical tastes. The author also gives an account that has historical fidelity - we cannot really understand the Republic or the Gorgias if we forget that the Athens of the conversations is meant to be the Athens of Nicias or Cleon, not the very different Athens of Plato's own manhoo
