"As well as the complete text of the play itself, the volume contains a chronology of the playwright's life and work, an introduction giving the background to the play, a discussion of the various interpretations, and notes on individual words and phrases in the text."--Jacket

"Nikolai Gogol's novel Dead Souls and play The Government Inspector revolutionized Russian literature and continue to entertain generations of readers around the world. Yet Gogol's peculiar genius comes through most powerfully in his short stories. By turns-or at once-funny, terrifying, and profound, the tales collected in The Nose and Other Stories are among the greatest achievements of world literature. These stories showcase Gogol's vivid, haunting imagination: an encounter with evil in a darkened church, a downtrodden clerk who dreams only of a new overcoat, a nose that falls off a face and reappears around town on its own, outranking its former owner. Written between 1831 and 1842, they span the colorful setting of rural Ukraine to the unforgiving urban landscape of St. Petersburg to the ancient labyrinth of Rome. Yet they share Gogol's characteristic obsessions-city crowds, bureaucratic hierarchy and irrationality, the devil in disguise-and a constant undercurrent of the absurd. Susanne Fusso's translations pay careful attention to the strangeness and wonder of Gogol's style, preserving the inimitable humor and oddity of his language. The Nose and Other Stories reveals why Russian writers from Dostoevsky to Nabokov have returned to Gogol as the cornerstone of their unparalleled literary tradition"--
The overcoat by Nikolaĭ Vasilʹevich Gogolʹ( Book )

107 editions published between 1842 and 2020 in 4 languages and held by 810 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nikolai Gogol was talented enough to catch the notice of not just his contemporaries but his government. Considered one of Russia's greatest writers during his day, Gogol's Dead Souls satirized the corruption of the Russian government enough that it forced him into exile. Dead Souls features Gogol's classic prose and verse forms, with Gogol himself considering it epic poetry. Despite the fact that it was technically unfinished, with Gogol famously burning the second part of the manuscript, it's still universally hailed as one of Gogol's classics. --Amazon
The mantle, and other stories by Nikolaĭ Vasilʹevich Gogolʹ( )

27 editions published between 1916 and 2020 in English and held by 696 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With his sense of humor and ability to observe, Nikolai Gogol presents the world with stories of little people: the weak and fragile people who try to hold on to life in the gloomy cities of Russia. "The Mantle", which is listed among his masterpieces, describes how Russian bureaucracy turns everyone into a ghost of each other. It tells the tragicomic story of a poor low-ranking official named Akakiy Akakiyevich Bashmachkin, a faint character living on the margins of society who spends all his time diligently copying documents. Drawn into bureaucratic mechanisms of modern life, humiliated, and despised, h? finds solace in his fondest dream: a mantle that will protect him from the cold in the winter. This humble dream, however, will cost him way too much and will turn his life upside down...Adapted into a variety of stage and film interpretations, the story is a major milestone in Russian literature, as expressed by in a quote often attributed to Fyodor Dostoyevsky: "We have all come out from under Gogol's Mantle". Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) was a Ukrainian-born Russian humorist, novelist, and dramatist whose work played a crucial role in the direction of Russian literature. He was considered to be one of the leading figures of Russian realism. His novel "Dead Souls", a satire of the political corruption in the Russian Empire, is viewed by many literary historians as the first great Russian novel. Among his contributions to Russian and world literature are the surrealistic and grotesque "The Nose" and "The Mantle", the satirical "The Inspector General", the historical novel "Taras Bulba", the comedy "Marriage", the humorous short stories "Diary of a Madman" and "The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich". His works have influenced generations of readers and still continue to impress with their subtle psychologism and matchless style. [Elib]

The divine liturgy of the Eastern Orthodox Church by Nikolaĭ Vasilʹevich Gogolʹ( Book )

79 editions published between 1847 and 2014 in 6 languages and held by 558 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nikolai Gogol was one of the most prominent Russian writers of the 19th century. He was a leading voice of the school of Russian literary realism, and is well known for his short stories, satires, and plays. He was also a deeply religious man, who dedicated one of his last works to the Divine Liturgy of the Orthodox Church. This book provides a commentary on the Divine Liturgy, that is at the same time both mystical and practical. Drawing from the early Church Fathers and his own experience, Gogol explains the sublime mystery of the Orthodox divine services, while at the same time providing a window into his own spiritual life. Evenings on a farm near Dikanka by Nikolaĭ Vasilʹevich Gogolʹ( Book )

129 editions published between 1832 and 2021 in 9 languages and held by 520 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the autumn of 1831, some easter from the Poltava province issued a book under the tantalizing title "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka". The simple-hearted villager, as if in a frightened way, recommended to the enlightened public four fantastic stories allegedly told at gatherings in his modest hut. "This is real gaiety, sincere, unconstrained, without cheating, without being stiff. In some places, what poetry! What sensitivity!" - so welcomed the new book Pushkin. He knew that, under the mask of an old farmer, a twenty-two-year-old writer is hiding, happily inventing and colorful characters (daring dudes, dazzling marvels, stubborn old men, angry women, mermaids, witches, devils - in a word, all sorts of people and nonhumans), and funny storytellers , and the collector himself invariably "truthful" nonsense - Rudy Pank. Nowadays the name of the writer "Evenings ..." is known to all, in 1831, very few knew him. But among them were two great poets - Zhukovsky ..." --Vasha Kniga
