Hiroshige : prints and drawings by Matthi Forrer( Book )

22 editions published in 1997 in English and German and held by 465 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) holds an assured place in the history of world art as one of the greatest and best-loved masters of the wood-block print." "For this book, published on the occasion of an exhibition held at the Royal Academy of Arts in London to mark the bicentenary of the artist's birth, every effort has been made to reproduce the finest early impressions. Each plate is provided with a commentary by Matthi Forrer who, in an introductory essay, examines Hiroshige's life and work, assessing his place in Japanese art and making some important revisions to the generally accepted chronology of his oeuvre. Suzuki Juzo, in his essay, makes a plea for seeing Hiroshige as a whole, drawing attention to aspects of the artist's work and personality that are often overlooked, while Henry D. Smith II places Hiroshige and his art in their social and political context."--BOOK JACKET

Hokusai by Matthi Forrer( Book )

6 editions published in 2010 in English and German and held by 160 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This expansive, authoritative and deluxe monograph offers a wide-ranging examination of one of Japan's most celebrated artists. In "Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji," Hokusai created an iconic work that includes universally recognized and beloved images of the Japanese landscape. The same broad perspective and attention to detail is brought to bear in this monumental book that follows the full spectrum of Hokusai's life and work. From his first prints to his most accomplished productions, including drawings and paintings, each stage of Hokusai's artistic development is presented within the context of Japanese cultural history. In addition to placing him among contemporaries from his native country, the book discusses the profound influence Hokusai had on European artists, particularly the Impressionists. Matthi Forrer, one of the world's leading authorities on the artist, vibrantly interweaves brilliant reproductions from every period of Hokusai's life with fascinating commentary. Presented in a luxurious large-format edition, the book offers a comprehensive perspective combined with the latest scholarly findings."--Publisher's website

Surimono in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam by Matthi Forrer( Book )

8 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 97 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Surimono (literally ‘printed things’) constitute one of the most delicate genres in Japanese printmaking. This genre fascinates because it combines poetry and image and because it presents a pictorial puzzle, which provides the viewer with a particular insight into the intellectual and literary world of late 18th- and early 19th-century Edo (today’s Tokyo). Major artists such as Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Kunisada, Totoya Hokkei and Yashima Gakutei, to name but a few, provided imagery to accompany the poetic exploits of poetry club members. The prints were circulated among networks of poets and friends and, in contrast to other prints of the period, were not produced for commercial gain. Intricate still lifes, historical and mythical heroes, actors on the stage and tranquil landscapes form a visual partnership with the witty poems (kyōka). The beauty of these prints is enhanced by the astonishing printing quality, including the use of metallic pigments and blindprinting."--Publisher's description
