9 editions published in 1995 in English and German and held by 467 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Moving across space and time, from prehistory to the present and around the world, this fascinating volume explores the many ways in which the earth has been transformed by human effort. In discerning text, more than 150 fabulous photographs - many of them taken by some of the world's premier aerial photographers - and 21 arresting drawings, paintings, and other artworks, Designing the Earth examines such diverse works as clay dwellings in Chad and Mali, adobe pueblos in the American Southwest, mud-brick ziggurats in Babylon, ancient Egyptian funerary monuments, subterranean aqueducts in Iran, Native American effigy mounds, the Nazca lines of Peru, artificial islands in Japan, the Great Wall of China, Mount Rushmore, and earth-sheltered housing by Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as earthworks by contemporary artists such as Michael Heizer and Andy Goldsworthy." "By considering the works in a larger design context, and by discussing their meaning, import, and use, author David Bourdon opens the reader's eyes to the formal and functional characteristics of earthworks around the world as he explores how people on different continents, unknown to each other, demonstrated remarkable similarities in the recontouring of their landscapes."--Jacket

5 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 70 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this title the works of the early period (1958-1969) of artistic activities by Christo and Jeanne-Claude are united to show how their exceptional career developed. From the very early small packages to wrapped barrels and other wrapped objects like chairs, tables, typewriters, bottles, flowers and telephones to the period of storefronts - some of them life-size - and the first proposals to wrap entire buildings, the experience of this art-form is presented. Already in the sixties the artists moved their work out of the studio into open space to confront the general public with their art. Early examples like the "Dockside Packages" at Cologne Harbor in 1961, the "Iron Curtain-Wall of Oil Barrels" blocking the Rue Visconti in Paris in 1962 and the "Wrapped Fountain" and "Wrapped Medieval Tower" in Spoleto finally led to the "5,600 Cubicmeter Package, Documenta 4, Kassel" an Air Package 280 feet high and to the first wrapped buildings, the wrapping of the "Kunsthalle Bern" in 1968 and the "Wrapped Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago" in 1969. The book concludes with the work "Wrapped Coast, Little Bay, One million square feet, Sydney, Australia" when the wrapping of a whole coastline provided a taste of things to come in the following decade
