Process and reality : an essay in cosmology by Alfred North Whitehead( Book )

160 editions published between 1929 and 1990 in English and Spanish and held by 3,319 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Process and Reality, Whitehead's magnum opus, is one of the major philosophical works of the modern world, and an extensive body of secondary literature has developed around it. Yet surely no significant philosophical book has appeared in the last two centuries in nearly so deplorable a condition as has this one, with its many hundreds of errors and with over three hundred discrepancies between the American (Macmillan) and the English (Cambridge) editions, which appeared in different formats with divergent paginations. The work itself is highly technical and far from easy to understand, and in many passages the errors in those editions were such as to compound the difficulties. The need for a corrected edition has been keenly felt for many decades
The aims of education & other essays by Alfred North Whitehead( Book )

204 editions published between 1929 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 2,895 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The general topic of this volume is education on its intellectual side. One main idea runs through the various chapters, and it is illustrated in them from many points of view. It can be stated briefly thus: the students are alive, and the purpose of education is to stimulate and guide their self-development. It follows as a corollary from this premise, that the teachers also should be alive with living thoughts. The whole book is a protest against dead knowledge, that is to say, inert ideas. - Preface

An introduction to mathematics by Alfred North Whitehead( Book )

200 editions published between 1910 and 2017 in 7 languages and held by 2,079 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The object of the following chapters is not to teach mathematics, but to enable students from the very beginning of their course to know what the science is about, and why it is necessarily the foundation of exact thought as applied to natural phenomena." Thus begins this volume by the prominent English philosopher and mathematician Alfred North Whitehead, a concise statement on the nature and meaning of mathematics for the general student. Expertly written and abounding in insights, the book presents a lively exposition of mathematical concepts, the history of their development and their applications to the physical world. Whitehead explains in broad terms what mathematics is about, what it does, and how mathematicians do it. Generations of readers who have stayed with the philosopher from the beginning to the end have found themselves amply rewarded for taking this journey. As The New York Times observed decades ago, "Whitehead doesn't popularize or make palatable; he is simply lucid and cogent ... A finely balanced mixture of knowledge and urbanity ... Should delight you."

The concept of nature, Tarner lectures delivered in Trinity College, November, 1919 by Alfred North Whitehead( Book )

172 editions published between 1920 and 2015 in English and held by 1,733 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Originally published in 1920 and based on the Tarner Lectures in the philosophy of science, this early work by Alfred North Whitehead made an important contribution to the development of philosophic naturalism. It featured his assessment of the impact of Einstein's theories and the new findings of modern physics on nature." "Whitehead critiques generally accepted ideas about substance, space, and time, as inherited from ancient Greek philosophers and as modified in the Enlightenment. Although Whitehead accepted Einstein's theory of relativity, he took issue with Einstein's interpretation of it. Instead of positing matter as the substratum of the universe, Whitehead argued for the "event" and the "process of becoming" as the starting points for analyzing reality. He thought that this "organic" interpretation was closer to our direct, everyday experience of attributes and their relations than the abstract notion of matter assumed by philosophers and scientists for so many centuries."--Jacket

Wissenschaft und moderne Welt by Alfred North Whitehead( Book )

199 editions published between 1925 and 2012 in 6 languages and held by 987 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Alfred North Whitehead's Science and the modern world, originally published in 1925, redefines the concept of modern science. Presaging by more than half a century most of today's cutting-edge thought on the cultural ramifications of science and technology, Whitehead demands that readers understand and celebrate the contemporary, historical, and cultural context of scientific discovery. Taking readers through the history of modern science, Whitehead shows how cultural history has affected science over the ages in relation to such major intellectual themes as romanticism, relativity, quantum theory, religion, and movements for social progress

Principia mathematica : to *56 by Alfred North Whitehead( Book )

108 editions published between 1927 and 2010 in 3 languages and held by 806 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The great three-volume Principia Mathematica is deservedly the most famous work ever written on the foundations of mathematics. Its aim is to deduce all the fundamental propositions of logic and mathematics from a small number of logical premisses and primitive ideas, and so to prove that mathematics is a development of logic. This abridged text of Volume I contains the material that is most relevant to an introductory study of logic and the philosophy of mathematics (more advanced students will wish to refer to the complete edition). It contains the whole of the preliminary sections (which present the authors' justification of the philosophical standpoint adopted at the outset of their work); the whole of Part 1 (in which the logical properties of propositions, propositional functions, classes and relations are established); section 6 of Part 2 (dealing with unit classes and couples); and Appendices A and B (which give further developments of the argument on the theory of deduction and truth functions)
Alfred North Whitehead : an anthology by Alfred North Whitehead( Book )

22 editions published between 1953 and 2009 in English and held by 774 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"There are some men who cherish what ought to be. There are some men who stress what is. The former are moralists. The latter are scientists. Alfred North Whitehead was something of both." Thus Paul Weiss began his tribute to Whitehead at the time of his death, and it is, perhaps, the key to the rare quality which made Whitehead one of the most original and profound thinkers of the 20th century. This anthology includes major selections from his works, chosen with a view to include all the diverse aspects of his thought while avoiding repetition. An explanatory page before each selection states why the editors felt it to be important and representative. There is also a glossary of philosophical terms explaining the specialized meanings Whitehead attached to these terms.--Adapted from book jacket
