Science and the modern world by Alfred North Whitehead( Book )

369 editions published between 1925 and 2011 in 7 languages and held by 3,665 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Alfred North Whitehead's Science and the modern world, originally published in 1925, redefines the concept of modern science. Presaging by more than half a century most of today's cutting-edge thought on the cultural ramifications of science and technology, Whitehead demands that readers understand and celebrate the contemporary, historical, and cultural context of scientific discovery. Taking readers through the history of modern science, Whitehead shows how cultural history has affected science over the ages in relation to such major intellectual themes as romanticism, relativity, quantum theory, religion, and movements for social progress

Process and reality : an essay in cosmology by Alfred North Whitehead( Book )

106 editions published between 1929 and 1985 in 3 languages and held by 2,483 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Process and Reality, Whitehead's magnum opus, is one of the major philosophical works of the modern world, and an extensive body of secondary literature has developed around it. Yet surely no significant philosophical book has appeared in the last two centuries in nearly so deplorable a condition as has this one, with its many hundreds of errors and with over three hundred discrepancies between the American (Macmillan) and the English (Cambridge) editions, which appeared in different formats with divergent paginations. The work itself is highly technical and far from easy to understand, and in many passages the errors in those editions were such as to compound the difficulties. The need for a corrected edition has been keenly felt for many decades
An introduction to mathematics by Alfred North Whitehead( Book )

211 editions published between 1910 and 2017 in 7 languages and held by 2,236 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The object of the following chapters is not to teach mathematics, but to enable students from the very beginning of their course to know what the science is about, and why it is necessarily the foundation of exact thought as applied to natural phenomena." Thus begins this volume by the prominent English philosopher and mathematician Alfred North Whitehead, a concise statement on the nature and meaning of mathematics for the general student. Expertly written and abounding in insights, the book presents a lively exposition of mathematical concepts, the history of their development and their applications to the physical world. Whitehead explains in broad terms what mathematics is about, what it does, and how mathematicians do it. Generations of readers who have stayed with the philosopher from the beginning to the end have found themselves amply rewarded for taking this journey. As The New York Times observed decades ago, "Whitehead doesn't popularize or make palatable; he is simply lucid and cogent ... A finely balanced mixture of knowledge and urbanity ... Should delight you."

Alfred North Whitehead : an anthology by Alfred North Whitehead( Book )

23 editions published between 1953 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 752 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"There are some men who cherish what ought to be. There are some men who stress what is. The former are moralists. The latter are scientists. Alfred North Whitehead was something of both." Thus Paul Weiss began his tribute to Whitehead at the time of his death, and it is, perhaps, the key to the rare quality which made Whitehead one of the most original and profound thinkers of the 20th century. This anthology includes major selections from his works, chosen with a view to include all the diverse aspects of his thought while avoiding repetition. An explanatory page before each selection states why the editors felt it to be important and representative. There is also a glossary of philosophical terms explaining the specialized meanings Whitehead attached to these terms.--Adapted from book jacket

The Harvard lectures of Alfred North Whitehead, 1924 -1925 : philosophical presuppositions of science by Alfred North Whitehead( )

7 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 663 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Beginning in September of 1924, Alfred North Whitehead presented a regular course of 85 lectures which concluded in May of 1925. These represent the first ever philosophy lectures he gave and capture him working out the philosophical implications of the remarkable turns physics had taken in his lifetime. This volume finally recreates these lectures by transcribing notes by W.P. Bell, W.E. Hocking and Louise Heath taken at the time - many of which have only recently been discovered and including hundreds of sketches of Whitehead's blackboard diagrams. This is a unique insight into the evolution of Whitehead's thought during the months when he was drafting his seminal work, Science and the Modern World
