Rasforskning och steriliseringspolitik är två inslag i svensk historia som vållat stark diskussion och kollektiv självkritik. Även det svenska folkhemmet bar på mörka hemligheter, hette det när steriliseringsdebattens vågor gick som högst i slutet av 1990-talet. "Oönskade i folkhemmet" gavs ut 1991 och var den första studie som avslöjade detaljerna i den svenska steriliseringspolitiken från 1930- till 1970-talet. Här ges också den idéhistoriska bakgrunden. Boken skildrar rasbiologins framväxt från tiden kring sekelskiftet 1900 samt turbulensen kring det rasbiologiska institutet i Uppsala och dess chef Herman Lundborg. Men inte heller trettiotalets socialreformatorer stod främmande för rashygieniskt tänkande, om än med andra politiska och sociala ambitioner. Steriliseringarna, riktade mot samhällets svaga eller rentav "oönskade", utgör fortfarande ett omstritt kapitel i svensk social- och medicinhistoria. Rasbiologin och rashygienen är på ett liknande sätt en kontroversiell del av vetenskapshistorien. Kunskapen om denna historia är viktig för dagens diskussioner om genetik och fosterdiagnostik och om förhållandet mellan stat och individ. Boken är försedd med en nyskriven forskningsöversikt. The seventeen Linnaeus Apostles were early scientific global travellers; young men who during half a century travelled to more than fifty countries on all seven continents under commission of the famous Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus, Academies of Sciences, East India Companies or private patrons. Along with several expeditions, where some of the Apostles were engaged and participated -- on James Cook's first and second circumnavigations, in the Danish scientific expedition to South Arabia and the Imperial Academy of Sciences' expeditions in Russia.
