Paterson by William Carlos Williams( Book )

183 editions published between 1848 and 2019 in 7 languages and held by 3,738 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Long recognized as a masterpiece of modern American poetry, William Carlos Williams' Paterson is one man's testament and vision, "a humanist manifesto enacted in five books, a grammar to help us to live" (Denis Donoghue). Paterson is both a place - the New Jersey city near which Williams lived - and a man: the symbolic figure in whom the person (the poet's own life) and the public (the history of the region) are combined. Originally four books (published individually between 1946 and 1951), the structure of Paterson (in Dr. Williams' words) "follows the course of the Passaic River, whose life seemed more and more to resemble my own: the river above the Falls, the catastrophe of the Falls itself, the river below the Falls and the entrance at the end into the great sea." Book Five, published in 1958, when the poet was seventy-five, affirms the triumphant life of the imagination, in spite of age and death. This edition has been completely re-edited by noted Williams scholar Christopher MacGowan of the College of William and Mary and, in addition to presenting the most authoritative text possible, contains invaluable notes identifying Williams' sources and references

"William Carlos Williams was not a historian, but he was fascinated by the texture of American history. Beginning with Columbus's discovery of the Indies and moving on through Sir Walter Raleigh, Cotton Mather, Daniel Boone, George Washington, Ben Franklin, Aaron Burr, Edgar Allan Poe, and Abraham Lincoln, Williams found in the fabric of familiar episodes new shades of meaning and configurations of character. He brought a poetic imagination to the task of reconstructing a live tradition for Americans, and what results is one of the finest works of prose to have been penned by any writer of the twentieth century."--

The complete works of Francois Villon by François Villon( Book )

10 editions published between 1960 and 1964 in English and held by 1,003 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The poetry of François Villon is always intensely personal, a distillation of the heart and soul of perhaps the most notorious figure in all literature. Libertine, brawler, thief, scholar, rake, murderer, Villon was a citizen of Paris and a lover of its teeming streets, the sounds and sights of which fill his works: "The Legacy", "The Testament", "Miscellaneous Poems", and "Poems in Slang". The works of the man who has been called the key figure in modern poetry are presented here in a fresh, free-verse English translation as well as in the original French. The design of the book is such that the French text and the English translation face each other on opposite pages, line for line, verse for verse. Along with the brilliant introduction by William Carlos Williams, the volume contains a short biography of Villon, a foreword concerning the text, translation, and notes, as well as a bibliography and an index of first lines, both in French and in English. -- From publisher's description
