The English romantic painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) is known and admired for portraying the transcendent power and turbulence of nature in his paintings of landscapes and storms at sea. J.M.W. Turner by
Peter Ackroyd(
Book
)
9 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 684 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In straightforward fashion, Ackroyd outlines the career of this remarkable man, who progressed rapidly from his early years as a student at the Royal Academy to prominence as one of England's foremost painters, creating dramatic works in which he explored the glowing effects of light fused with air, water, fire and steam. Turner's paintings, which often approach abstraction, astounded and shocked his critics, causing some to say he was a madman, an assessment reinforced by his eccentric, irascible character. Ackroyd shows how the artist, who never married and lived all his life with his father ₂though he had secret liaisons and two illegitimate daughters₂was obsessed with his art, but was also an astute businessman, opening his own gallery in London when he was only 29, cultivating prosperous patrons and speculating in land and houses, all the while turning out a multitude of dazzling oil paintings, watercolors and engravings. This is a short but intriguing introduction to the life and output of an artist who claimed that he knew of "no genius but the genius of hard work." Publishers Weekly

Turner confronted nature at the point where nature itself is an image. This book opens up Turner's paintings for the eye, demonstrating that he was not simply illustrating nature, but that his pictures speak directly to the eye as nature does itself-through a world of light and colour

"J. M.W. Turner was a painter whose treatment of light put him squarely in the pantheon of the world's preeminent artists, but his character was a tangle of fascinating contradictions. While he could be coarse and rude, manipulative, ill-mannered, and inarticulate, he was also generous, questioning, and humane, and he displayed through his work a hitherto unrecognized optimism about the course of human progress. With two illegitimate daughters and several mistresses whom Turner made a career of not including in his public life, the painter was also known for his entrepreneurial cunning, demanding and receiving the highest prices for his work." "Over the course of sixty years, Turner traveled thousands of miles to seek out the landscapes of England and Europe. He was drawn overwhelmingly to coasts, to the electrifying rub of the land with the sea, and he regularly observed their union from the cliff, the beach, the pier, or from a small boat. Fueled by his prodigious talent, Turner revealed to himself and others the personality of the British and European landscapes and the moods of the surrounding seas. He kept no diary, but his many sketchbooks are intensely autobiographical, giving clues to his techniques, his itineraries, his income and expenditures, and his struggle to master the theories of perspective." "In Turner, James Hamilton takes advantage of new material discovered since the 1975 bicentennial celebration of the artist's birth, paying particular attention to the diary of sketches with which Turner narrated his life. Hamilton's textured portrait is fully complemented by a sixteen-page illustrations insert, including many color reproductions of Turner's most famous landscape paintings. Seamlessly blending vibrant biography with astute art criticism, Hamilton writes with energy, style, and erudition to address the contradictions of this great artist."--Jacket

"J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) is the most masterly of British painters. His work exploits the great traditions of European painting, while anticipating the development of modern art in the twentieth century. As a Romantic, he was from his earliest works sensitive to the natural dramas found in land and seascapes, though increasingly light and colour alone became all-important to him. He travelled through England, France, Italy and Switzerland, and his views are possibly the most imaginative evocations of these countries ever painted. The essay by William Gaunt (1900-80), an acknowledged authority on British art, was originally published in 1971. For this new edition Robin Hamlyn, Research Assistant in the Historic British Collection at the Tate Gallery, has added notes to the colour plates, for which he has drawn extensively on the most recent research on Turner, and many black and white illustrations."

Turner on the Thames : river journeys in the year 1805 by
David Hill(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 517 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"J.M.W. Turner had a lifelong association with the River Thames. He was born near the river and throughout his life he maintained a home on or within wasy reach of its banks. Thames scenery was a favourite source of inspiration for paintings, watercolours and sketches. In 1805, Turner moved into Syon Ferry House, overlooking the Thames at Isleworth. He spent the succeeding months sailing and fishing, reading and dreaming, filling his sketchbooks with vivid records of his observations and imaginings and painting oil sketches that rank among the most immediate and vital works he produced. In this book, David Hill retraces Turner's journeys along the Thames during 1805: his explorations of the river in his immediate neighbourhood; his sailing trips upstream to Oxford or trips down the River Wey to Guildford and Godalming, and his adventures downstream through the port of London and out to the open waters of the Estuary and the Nore. Hill charts the growth of Turner's association with the river, the way in which he transformed his sketches from this period into paintings and influence of his Thames experience on the rest of his career. Combining art historical research with topographical and social history, Hill provides a chronology of Turner's sketches in different media and identifies and describes the scenery and buildings they depicted."--Amazon.com

Ruskin, Turner, and the pre-Raphaelites by
Robert Hewison(
Book
)
4 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 506 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"John Ruskin was the first critic to make his reputation by championing contemporary art: first by defending Turner, in his book Modern Painters, and then by giving his decisive support to the avant-garde, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He bacame one of the defining voices of the nineteenth century, engaging not only in the discussion of art and architecture, but in the social issues of his age. Ruskin, Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites, which marks the centenary of Ruskin's death, recovers his role as a contemporary critic by bringing together many of the masterpieces that he wrote about, and exploring his personal links with some of the greatest painters of the Victorian period. He was also an artist in his own right, and Ruskin's finest drawings are used to demonstrate the arguments of a critic for whom 'All great art is praise.' Also featured are many works that were in Ruskin's own art collection"--Page 4 of cover
