Tobias Varland was born 10 January 1855 on an island near Stavanger, Norway. He grew up on a farm in Norway and immigrated to America at the age of eighteen. Tobias moved to Lee, Illinois and married Malinda Johnson, daughter of Andrew and Sarah Johnson. They were the parents of fourteen children. Tobias died December of 1931 in Ottawa, Illinois. Descendants lived primarily in Illinois, South Dakota and Minnesota
