O'Keeffe's O'Keeffes : the artist's collection by Barbara Buhler Lynes ( Book )
3 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 1,087 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Georgia O'Keeffe was one of America's pre-eminent artists, and the first to experiment with abstraction, though she never abandoned her deep response to and observation of nature. Enormously popular, she became identified and respected as an independent spirit for both her art and her life." "This book explores the significance of O'Keeffe's collection of her own work. Approximately 75 seminal works, dating from about 1910 to the end of the 1960s document the range and quality of the art that O'Keeffe either chose to retain in her estate or consciously distributed in her lifetime as bequests. It provides a unique perspective from which to understand O'Keeffe as artist and collector."--BOOK JACKET

Matisse : a second life by Henri Matisse ( Book )
3 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 547 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This catalogue devoted to Matisse's late work--a period he described as his 'second life'--sheds exceptional new light on the artist through his correspondence with the writer André Rouveyre. Beginning with Matisse's serious operation in 1941 and ending with his death in 1954, these last years saw an extraordinary blossoming of his art. His correspondence with André Rouveyre--a novelist and artist dreaded for his cruel portraits, who was also Matisse's old friend from their student days at Gustave Moreau's studio--testifies almost daily to this autumn triumph. The voluminous written exchange (nearly 1,200 letters, many of which are covered with drawings or decorations by the artist), with its wealth of fertile observation, offers a unique look at Matisse's creative process and aspirations during a period when he was redefining his modes of artistic expression. For the first time, this catalogue, like the exhibition it accompanies, relates a selection of these letters and their drawings to works produced during the same years: oils on canvas, drawings, illustrated books along with their studies, tapestries, stained-glass window maquettes, preparatory studies for the wall decorations of the chapel at Vence and a number of dazzling large and small paper cut outs, representing the culmination of a half-century's work and Matisse's radical creative renewal.--Book jacket
Cindy Sherman : retrospective by Cindy Sherman ( Book )
7 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and French and held by 408 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This comprehensive catalogue traces the career of Cindy Sherman, examining her achievements as one of the leading American artists of our time. By exploring the myriad constructions of female identity and the body in our culture, Sherman imitates and confronts assorted representational stereotypes, becoming for many an icon of the contemporary concerns of feminism and postmodernism. Essayists Amada Cruz, Elizabeth A. T. Smith, and Amelia Jones offer keen insight and observations from several distinct vantage points, demonstrating that Sherman's work is a lens through which to view contemporary art and its ongoing concern with the profound issues of the structures of the self. More than 200 images show the breadth of Sherman's body of work, from the Untitled Film Stills of the 1970s to series such as Centerfolds, Fashion, Disasters, Fairy Tales, and History Portraits, as well as photographs influenced by surrealist artists. Also included are intriguing excerpts from Sherman's notebooks, selections from her contact sheets, and numerous Polaroid studies, all of which shed light on the artist's process

Max Ernst : dream and revolution by Max Ernst ( Book )
4 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 248 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Max Ernst (1891-1976) is one of the most significant and influential artists of the twentieth century. Influenced by two world wars, he repeatedly questioned and adjusted his repertoire of expression throughout his entire career and reflected on the potentials of art with vast inventiveness. His complex pictorial worlds now seem more relevant than ever before: a younger audience will be able to discover links between Max Ernst's fantasy worlds and their own travels to the cyber worlds of modern computer games." "This publication considers Max Ernst's revolutionary life's work from a new perspective. It examines in detail his Dada years in Cologne, his residence in France from 1921 to 1941 and his importance amid the Parisian Surrealists, the decade in American exile, and the period after his return to Europe until his death. Moreover the contributions by Ludger Derenthal, Julia Drost, Benjamin Meyer-Krahmer, Iris Muller-Westermann, Jurgen Pech, Werner Spies, and Tanja Wessolowski focus on central aspects of Max Ernst's manifold oeuvre."--BOOK JACKET

Cézanne & Giacometti : paths of doubt by Paul Cézanne ( Book )
5 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 226 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) has been the artist's artist of choice for more than a century now, and there seems to be no end to the inspirational forces embedded within his work. Despite the sixty-two years separating their births, it is almost impossible to avoid drawing comparisons between the lives and works of Cezanne and Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). Both men began with a violent period of creation, focusing on sex and struggle until a decisive creative shift meant that they instead devoted themselves to the task of realistic representation. Even in his works which seem stylistically unrelated, Giacometti made frequent allusions to the master from Aix." "With essays by Felix A. Baumann, Tobia Bezzola, Inken Freudenberg, Donat Rutimann, Poul Erik Tojner, and Veronique Wiesinger, this publication closely examines the development of this affiliation, revealing how an appreciation of Giacometti's work can shed new light on Cezanne's artistic achievements and exploring the possibility that - in spite of chronological complications - this relationship was one that benefited both artists."--BOOK JACKET
