Death on the installment plan by Louis-Ferdinand Céline( Book )

283 editions published between 1936 and 2018 in 11 languages and held by 2,807 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Death on the Installment Plan is a companion volume to Louis-Ferinand Céline's earlier novel Journey to the End of Night. Published in rapid succession in the middle 1930s, these two books shocked European literatue and world consciousness. Nominally fiction but more rightly called "creative confessions," they told of the author's childhood in excoriating Paris slums, of serves in the mud wastes of World War I and African jungles. Mixing unmitigated despair with Gargantuan comedy, they also created a new style, in which invective and obscenity were laced with phrases of unforgettable poetry

Rigadoon by Louis-Ferdinand Céline( Book )

82 editions published between 1964 and 2015 in 11 languages and held by 1,392 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Completed the day before his death in 1961, Rigadoon, the most compassionate of Celine's novels, explores the ravages of war and its aftermath. Often comic and always angry, the first-person autobiographical narrator, with his wife and their cat in tow, takes the reader with him on his flight from Paris to Denmark after finding himself on the losing side of World War II. The train rides that encompass the novel are filled with madness and mercy, as Celine, a physician, aids refugees while ignoring his own medical needs."--Jacket
Guignol's band by Louis-Ferdinand Céline( Book )

113 editions published between 1944 and 2017 in 8 languages and held by 1,022 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Celine's third novel, first published in 1944 but dealing with events taking place during the First World War, Guignol's Band follows the narrator's meanderings through London after he has been demobilized due to a war injury. The result is a frank, uncompromising, yet grotesquely funny portrayal of the English capital's seedy underworld, peopled by prostitutes, pimps and schemers
London Bridge : Guignol's Band II by Louis-Ferdinand Céline( Book )

53 editions published between 1964 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 916 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"One of the last major untranslated works by France's most controversial author, London Bridge is a riotous novel about the London underworld during World War I. Picking up where Guignol's Band (1944; English translation 1954) left off, Celine's autobiographical narrator recounts his disastrous partnership with a mystical Frenchman (intent on financing a trip to Tibet by winning a gas-mask competition); his uneasy relationship with London's pimps and whores and their common nemesis, Inspector Matthew of Scotland Yard; and, most scandalously, his affair with a baronet's 14-year-old daughter, an English angel whose descent into vice is suspiciously smooth. He dreams of escaping with her to America to start a new life, but he, his mystical partner, and his underaged mistress finally awake to reality crossing windswept London Bridge."--Jacket
Fable for another time = Férie pour une autre fois I by Louis-Ferdinand Céline( Book )

52 editions published between 1952 and 2010 in 4 languages and held by 574 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Fable for Another Time is one of the most significant and far-reaching literary texts of postwar France. Composed in the tumultuous aftermath of World War II, largely in the Danish prison cell where the author was awaiting extradition to France on charges of high treason, the book offers a unique perspective on the war, the postwar political purges in France, and Louis-Ferdinand Celine's own dissident politics."

Ballets sans musique, sans personne, sans rien by Louis-Ferdinand Céline( Book )

20 editions published between 1959 and 2006 in 3 languages and held by 339 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Celine's fascination with the ballet spans his literary career: three of the pieces in this volume were written around the same time that he published his great novel, Voyage au bout de la nuit, which he dedicated to the dancer Elisabeth Craig. At the time of his death, according to his wife - also a dancer - he was planning a book devoted to dance." "In 1936, after finishing his monumental second novel, Mort a credit, Celine visited Russia, where he hoped to have some of his ballets performed at the Theater Marinski in Leningrad. He failed to get any of them performed. But through this period he continued writing ballets. In 1959 five ballets were collected by Editions Gallimard with illustrations by Eliane Bonabel. The result is this edition, never before published in English, that reveals a central concern of Celine's writing while simultaneously displaying his comic structures and the struggle between idyllic beauty and inescapable deterioration, death, and the grotesque of his great fictions."--BOOK JACKET

The tract revolves around the physician-narrator's failed efforts to find a professional dance company to perform his ballets, scenarios for three of which appear in the narrative. In dialogues with a range of interlocutors, the narrator vents his spleen on the people whom he holds responsible for all of his failures--Jews. Céline did not wish this work to be republished after 1945 and his widow, Lucette Destouches, who held the copyright, opposed any new publication, respecting the wishes of her husband
