The English Constitution. With an introd. by R.H.S. Crossman by Walter Bagehot( Book )

633 editions published between 1863 and 2017 in 7 languages and held by 8,855 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Walter Bagehot's The English Constitution (1867) is the best account of the history and workings of the British political system ever written. As arguments raged in mid-Victorian Britain about giving the working man the vote, and democracies overseas were pitched into despotism and civil war, Bagehot took a long, cool look at the "dignified" and "efficient" elements which made the English system the envy of the world. His analysis of the monarchy, the role of the prime minister and cabinet, and comparisons with the American presidential system are astute and timeless, pertinent to current discussions surrounding devolution and electoral reform. Combining the wit and panache of a journalist with the wisdom of a man of letters steeped in evolutionary ideas and historical knowledge, Bagehot produced a book which is always thoughtful, often funny, and surprisingly entertaining. This edition reproduces Bagehot's original 1867 work in full, and introduces the reader to the dramatic political events that surrounded its publication
Lombard Street, a description of the money market by Walter Bagehot( Book )

270 editions published between 1873 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,903 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The English precursor to Wall Street, London's Lombard Street is the original district of finance and the birthplace of the money market. Fast-paced and highly-charged, it is a hotbed of financial activity whose impact is felt not just nationally, but globally." "The chef d'oeuvre of Walter Bagehot, Lombard Street began as a series of articles the esteemed essayist and financial advisor had written for the Economist during the 1850s. First published in book form in 1873, it is a vivid description of the money market that seamlessly brings together theoretical analyses, historical anecdotes, and incisive commentary on sociology, politics, and the Street's various personalities." "Perhaps most importantly, Lombard Street features Bagehot's prescription for crisis management, which after nearly 150 years, remains the formula of choice for containing - and curtailing - financial crises."--Jacket

98 editions published between 1872 and 2011 in 3 languages and held by 1,076 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Walter Bagehot (1826-1877) was an eminent British journalist, businessman and political commentator. After graduating from University College, London, in 1848, Bagehot joined his father's banking business. In 1857 he began to write articles for The Economist and became editor in 1861, a position he held until his death. This volume, first published in 1872, contains Bagehot's discussion of the scientific principles of progress in a society. Incorporating aspects of other social disciplines, including anthropology and Darwinian evolutionary theory, Bagehot traces the development of political society from an assumed 'pre-political' age to the development of nation-states, and examines the developments necessary for evolution into a liberal, trade-oriented society. Bagehot's appreciation of both conservative and liberal values is evident in this volume, which provides a valuable example of the influence of Darwinian thought in the late nineteenth century. This text is reissued from the 1873 second edition

Physics and politics, or, Thoughts on the application of the principles of "natural selection" and "inheritance" to political society by Walter Bagehot( Book )

88 editions published between 1872 and 2015 in English and Undetermined and held by 952 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"One of the great short masterpieces of nineteenth-century thought, Physics and Politics is in essence a brilliant essay in social psychology. It defines with grim humor the conditions of stability and social progress. "Physics," in Bagehot's book, refers to natural science; "politics" to social science. His vastly stimulating analysis was the first important effort to comprehend the implications of the new science (especially Darwinism) for the study of political affairs. In the process, Bagehot makes unforgettably clear the complex, often tragic relation between individual and collective happiness. Roger Kimball's introduction and notes place Bagehot's ideas in perspective for today's reader and evaluate the continuing usefulness of his observations."--Jacket

Bagehot was one of the first writers to describe and explain the world of international and corporate finance, banking, and money in understandable language. The book was in part a reaction to the 1866 collapse of Overend, Gurney and Company, located at 65 Lombard Street, from which the title draws its name. Bagehot's description, and knowledge, is timeless and a must for anyone who wants to understand our money market and economy
