"Is there a distinctive American style of historical scholarship? To what extent have quantitative methods and computer technology affected the writing of history? Has descriptive history been supplanted by analytical history? What constitutes adequate historical explanation? These are just a few of the questions addresed in "The Past Before Us." The contributors, twenty-one distinguished historians, discuss the state of their profession today and describe their interests, activities, and problems. Reflecting new and exciting trends in historical research, their essays, taken together, provide a searching assessment of the major advances in historical methods as well as in historical knowledge during the 1970s"--Jacket

Originally released in 1990, The New American History, edited for the American Historical Association by Eric Foner, has become an indispensable volume for teachers and students. Slavery in Mississippi by Charles S Sydnor( Book )

17 editions published between 1933 and 1980 in English and held by 978 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Slavery in Mississippi, first published in 1933, is a deeply researched and tightly argued social and economic study of slave life in Mississippi by Charles S. Sydnor (1898-1954). Inspired by Ulrich B. Phillips's American Negro Slavery (1918) and Life and Labor in the Old South (1929), Sydnor strived to test Phillips's contention that slavery was simultaneously a benign institution for African American slaves and an unprofitable one for their masters. Sydnor included path-breaking chapters on such broad scholarly topics as slave labor, slave trading, and the profitability of slavery, but he also examined in depth slave clothing, food, shelter, physical and social care, police control, slave fugitives, and punishments and rewards. More thorough than many previous historians, Sydnor examined how slavery "worked" as a social and economic system--how slaves actually lived, how planters bought, cared for, controlled, hired out, and sold their human property. Historian John David Smith's new introduction to this Southern Classic edition frames the original text within the scholarship on slavery in the interwar years, presents its arguments, chronicles its reception by white and black critics, and highlights the ongoing debates about slavery, especially on the profitability of slavery and the conditions of slave life sparked by Sydnor's influential book"--

American history now( Book )

11 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 285 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

<DIV> American History Now collects eighteen original historiographic essays that survey recent scholarship in American history and trace the shifting lines of interpretation and debate in the field. Building on the legacy of two previous editions of The New American History, this volume presents an entirely new group of contributors and a reconceptualized table of contents. The new generation of historians showcased in American History Now have asked new questions and developed new approaches to scholarship to revise the prevailing interpretations of the chronological periods from the Colonial era to the Reagan years. Covering the established subfields of women's history, African American history, and immigration history, the book also considers the history of capitalism, Native American history, environmental history, religious history, cultural history, and the history of "the United States in the world." American History Now provides an indispensible summation of the state of the field for those interested in the study and teaching of the American past. </DIV>
