California classics; the creative literature of the Golden State by Lawrence Clark Powell( Book )

8 editions published between 1971 and 1989 in English and Undetermined and held by 699 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author's personal preferences for 31 works which have been read beyond a single generation, ranging from Anza's California Expedition to Raymond Chandler's Farewell, My Lovely, are the subject of this illuminating study of the creative impulse of writers, not necessarily native sons, who have made California the setting of their masterpieces. In combining biography and criticism the author has gone to the original sources of each work, seeking the forces that created it--a love of landscape or a woman, literary chronicle of California, seen against a background of seacoast, valleys, mountains, deserts, and cities. Among the thousands of books of Californiana, it may be safely said that there is none like this one which blends literature, history, and geography with biography and criticism. First serialized in Westways these chapters were widely hailed as a freshly original guide to California's living literature. Now revised and rearranged, with the addition of brief reading lists, photographs, and a map, they form a valuable introduction for readers of all ages to one of California's chief glories, its richly varied creative literature

Death Valley and the creek called Furnace by Edwin Corle( Book )

2 editions published in 1962 in English and held by 344 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Born in New Jersey and educated at the University of California, Corle harvested some of the legends and some possibly true tales of Death Valley. Ansel Adams photographed the arid land, the blazing bright sky, the sand hills and gaunt rocks, the sagebrush and mesquite, the desolate peaks that are Death Valley. His camera caught the form, the shape, the spirit of the desert, where a less discerning eye might see only desolation. Corle's prose and Adams' photography are combined to create a book of great beauty, preserving the spirit and face of barren wilderness.--From Amazon.com

The Blue Train by Lawrence Clark Powell( Book )

8 editions published between 1977 and 1998 in English and French and held by 283 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Few writers wait until they are 70 to publish their first novel. The Blue Train was written in 1941 when the author was half that age. Although Henry Miller's response, included herewith as the Afterword, was enormously encouraging, Powell put the manuscript aside in favor of a long career as library administrator, teacher, bibliographer, and essayist, during which he achieved wide renown. Upon retiring from UCLA in 1966, he rewrote the novel and once again put it aside as not ready to publish. Finally in 1975 in his 70th year, he gave The Blue Train a final revision--and here it is, a tender, youthful celebration of life and love, overdue and welcome n an age surfeited with brutal, pornographic sex
