A women's college as an agent of socialization for women's roles by Mirra Komarovsky( Book )

3 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 58 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A report on a study of freshmen women's beliefs about psychological sex differences, attitudes toward sex roles, and ideals of femininity and masculinity is presented. A random sample of 232 freshmen entering a woman's college in September 1979 was studied longitudinally. Study instruments included a scale consisting of 16 propositions regarding psychological sex differences, the Attitudes Towards Women Scale, and the Gough Adjective Check List for "My Ideal Woman" and "My Ideal Man." During fall 1980, the sophomores were readministered the study instruments, and 68 case studies were developed, based on interviews. A summary of the research findings is presented that indicates that the freshmen tended to reject the familiar psychological sex stereotypes and to endorse egalitarian sex roles. The following research areas are examined in depth, with case study illustrations: student transition to college and the vulnerability of freshmen to the first year of college; occupational plans, 1979-1983; life-style preferences, 1979-1983; female and male professors and female peers as agents of socialization for adult roles; and emotional and sexual relationships with men. Appendices include the interview guide and selected questionnaires. (Sw)

King Basilio has imprisoned his son, Segismundo, because the child was born under an inauspicious horoscope, and the king wants to spare his country the rule of a tyrant. When the question of succession is raised, the king confesses his doubts about the prophecy, and decides to put the prince to the test. If the prince is prudent, he will be permitted to rule; if not, he will be returned to prison and told that all was a dream. Drugged, the prince is brought to the palace, where he follows his baser inclinations. Drugged again, he is returned to the tower. Upon waking, the prince tries to suppress his animal nature, having been tutored by experience and a dream. Freed from prison by an uprising of soldiers, Segismundo leaves a wiser man. The prophecy of the horoscope is fulfilled when Basilio surrenders and throws himself at his son's feet. Reproving his father for his unwise policies, Segismundo in turn begs his father's forgiveness. Thus Basilio, learning from his son the lesson of prudence, acclaims him worthy of governing
Count Basie : Then as Now, Count's the King( Visual )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jazz great William "Count" Basie is remembered in this rich documentary, which traces the history of the pianist, composer, and bandleader over several decades. Filmmaker Gary Keys juxtaposes a roundtable discussion among the old cats from the Count Basie Orchestra with recorded performances, including Basie's cameo appearance in Blazing Saddles. Archival clips, portraits, and snapshots recall Basie's ever-smiling face, as vivacious as the grooves he delivers here - his good humor suffusing the music, and around him all the players going at it, from Lester Young to Ella Fitzgerald
