The death of Virgil by
Hermann Broch(
Book
)
429 editions published between 1945 and 2022 in 26 languages and held by 3,365 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
It is the reign of the Emperor Augustus, and Publius Vergilius Maro, the poet of the Aeneid and Caesar's enchanter, has been summoned to the palace, where he will shortly die. Out of the last hours of Virgil's life and the final stirrings of his consciousness, the Austrian writer Hermann Broch fashioned one of the great works of twentieth-century modernism, a book that embraces an entire world and renders it with an immediacy that is at once sensual and profound. Begun while Broch was imprisoned in a German concentration camp, The Death of Virgil is part historical novel and part prose poem -- and always an intensely musical and immensely evocative meditation on the relation between life and death, the ancient and the modern. -- Amazon.com

"Mild and sensitive Richard Hieck endured a quietly difficult childhood in Germany. Raised in humble circumstances, Richard was profoundly influenced by his withdrawn mother and by his father, an enigma whose devotion centered not on his five children but on his mysterious career. From his father, Richard inherited an interest in the night sky, learning to love the constellations and to take comfort in the strength of Orion and the warm radiance of Venus. Richard's shadowy, elusive father also influenced him to pursue studies in mathematics, a field offering Richard the discipline he had craved as a child

On the Iliad by
Rachel Bespaloff(
Book
)
15 editions published between 1947 and 2019 in English and held by 613 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hermann Broch(
Book
)
16 editions published in 1986 in German and held by 238 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
An exchange of letters on history and politics between Broch, a Jewish writer, and von Zühlsdorff, a founder of the American Guild for German Cultural Freedom - both of them refugees from Nazi Germany who settled in America. Letters 1-7 (pp. 21-41), written between July-September 1945, deal with the question of the Jews' return to Germany. Broch believed that Jews should not return because of the persistence of antisemitism, while Zühlsdorff argued that not all Germans were guilty for the Holocaust and that there was resistance to persecution of the Jews during the war - an argument vehemently denied by Broch, who insisted on the Germans' guilt even if it was only due to indifference
