"Considered the father of neuropathology, Charcot (1825-1893) is a seminal character in the history of neurology and psychology. His Moroccan travel diary includes his observations of the local Jewish community, which fortified his assumptions about the relationship between race and neuropathology. His ideas, taught as doctrine to, among others, a young Sigmund Freud, reveal the convergence of clinical observation and European anti-Semitism at the end of the nineteenth century"--Inside cover flap

"In this classic of French cultural studies, Georges Didi-Huberman traces the intimate and reciprocal relationship between the disciplines of psychiatry and photography in the late nineteenth century. Focusing on the immense photographic output of the Salpetriere hospital, the notorious Parisian asylum for insane and incurable women, Didi-Huberman shows the crucial role played by photography in the invention of the category of hysteria. Under the direction of the medical teacher and clinician Jean-Martin Charcot, the inmates of the Salpetriere identified as hysterics were methodically photographed, providing skeptical colleagues with visual proof of hysteria's specific form. These images, many of which appear in this book, provided the materials for the multivolume album Iconographie photographique de la Salpetriere."--Jacket

"Although but recently published in Paris, the Lectures of Professor Charcot on Diseases of the Nervous System have already taken a place amongst the classic works of medical literature, and been translated into several Continental languages. When preparing for the following version, it was judged best to await the appearance of the second French edition; thus the reader, in exchange for some delay, has been enabled to obtain the work in its most correct form, enlarged by about one-sixth"--Preface. Leçons sur les maladies du système nerveux faites à la Salpétrière by
Jean-Martin Charcot(
)
45 editions published between 1873 and 2018 in French and English and held by 154 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-93) was a professor of anatomical pathology at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris, and one of the founders of modern neurology. Numerous disorders are named after him, and he was one of the best known doctors in nineteenth-century France. He was the first to describe and name multiple sclerosis, and undertook crucial research into what became known as Parkinson's Disease. He also worked on hysteria, and was one of Freud's teachers. These two volumes of lectures on neurological illnesses, first published in Paris in 1872-3 and 1877, were based on extensive clinical studies at the Salpêtrière, and edited by Désiré Magloire Bourneville. Detailed analysis of symptoms, sometimes using photography, combined with post-mortem analyses, allowed Charcot to produce classic descriptions of different neurological disorders. Volume 2 includes methods of clinical observation, and notes on spinal compression, infantile paralysis, Ménière's Disease, and epilepsy caused by syphilis
