Mies in America by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe( Book )

26 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 710 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This study of one of the 20th century's greatest architects re-evaluates the entire body of work undertaken by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe between his emigration to America in 1938 and his death in 1969. Based on considerable new research and bringing to light previously unstudied material - drawings and collages, photographs, project documents, letters, and extensive interviews with many of those who worked with Mies - this is the first study to make full and in-depth use of available archival material. Its nine essays, distinct in style of argumentation, focus, and ambition, constitute a new interpretation of a major figure in architectural history." "Mies in America offers readers a deeper immersion into Mies's thought than has been attempted before. Venturing a more complex response than the familiar reading of Mies as a grand master of modernism, these essays retrace the genesis of Mies's design in order to uncover his ambitions, investigate the implicit outlines of the Miesian city, follow the process of designing for America, and look at Mies as a touchstone for contemporary practice."--Jacket

Mies by Detlef Mertins( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 339 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Arranged in chronological order, the book's five sections and its conclusion offer a synthetic portrait of Mies's career and reception, spanning sixty years, two continents and two world wars. The text tells a continuous story, however, most chapters focus on a significant work (the Seagram building or the IIT campus), allowing for an in-depth presentation of photographs and drawings; other chapters focus on a specific event in Mies's life (such Mies's time as the head of the Bauhaus)."--Résumé de l'éditeur

Together with documentation of his life, this film shows all his major buildings, as well as rare film footage of Mies explaining his philosophy. Phyllis Lambert relates her choice of Mies as the architect for the Seagram building. Mies's achievements and continuing influence are debated by architects Robert A.M. Stern, Robert Venturi, and Philip Johnson, by former students and by architectural historians. Mies is seen in rare documentary footage

Proud towers by Stephany Marks( Visual )

2 editions published in 1986 in English and held by 37 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

There was a time when the skyline was dominated by the church spire; in the 20th century, the skyscraper - a cathedral of commerce - has been the city's signature. Its forerunner was the commercial loft building, often an ersatz palazzo made of iron cast to look like stone; Louis Sullivan changed the horizontal focus by adding height. The distinction between a tall building and a skyscraper was drawn by the Flatiron Building - not just a warehouse with office workers, but a statement about the corporation. The first full-fledged skyscraper was the flamboyantly Gothic Woolworth Building; the Chicago Tribune Tower was next; the title of highest building was held for a short time by the Art Deco Chrysler Building; and then the torch passed to the Empire State Building - a symbolic and a technological breakthrough. The International Style, with its curtain walls of glass and aluminum, has been succeeded by the current trend (seen in Houston's Pennzoil Place and Transco Building and in Pittsburgh's PPG Place), which restores to skyscraper architecture its symbolic level and its historic roots
Building Seagram by Phyllis Lambert( Book )

9 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Seagram building rises over New York's Park Avenue, seeming to float above the street with perfect lines of bronze and glass. Considered one of the greatest icons of twentieth-century architecture, the building was commissioned by Samuel Bronfman, founder of the Canadian distillery dynasty Seagram. Bronfman's daughter Phyllis Lambert was twenty-seven years old when she took over the search for an architect and chose Mies van der Rohe (18861969), a pioneering modern master of what he termed "skin and bones" architecture. Mies, who designed the elegant, deceptively simple thirty-eight-story tower along with Philip Johnson (19062005), emphasized the beauty of structure and fine materials, and set the building back from the avenue, creating an urban oasis with the building's plaza. Through her choice, Lambert established her role as a leading architectural patron and singlehandedly changed the face of American urban architecture. Building Seagram is a comprehensive personal and scholarly history of a major building and its architectural, cultural, and urban legacies. Lambert makes use of previously unpublished personal archives, company correspondence, and photographs to tell an insider's view of the debates, resolutions, and unknown dramas of the building's construction, as well as its crucial role in the history of modern art and architectural culture."--Publisher description
