"This volume presents a colourful and entertaining overview of German intellectual history by a central figure in its development. Heinrich Heine (1797-1856), famous poet, journalist, and political exile, studied with Hegel and was personally acquainted with the leading figures of the most important generation of German writers and philosophers. In his groundbreaking History he discusses the history of religion, philosophy, and literature in Germany up to his time, seen through his own highly opinionated, politically aware, philosophically astute, and always ironic perspective. This work, and other writings focussing especially on Heine's rethinking of Hegel's philosophy, are presented here in a new translation by Howard Pollack-Milgate. The volume also includes an introduction by Terry Pinkard which examines Heine both in relation to Hegel and Nietzsche and as a thinker in his own right"--Publisher description
Travel pictures by Heinrich Heine( Book )

540 editions published between 1800 and 2021 in 9 languages and held by 2,410 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Heinrich Heine (1797–1856), one of Germany’s most revered poets, is equally well-known for his idiosyncratic prose, the vibrant voice of which feels astonishingly modern in its familiar tone and thematic acrobatics. Travel Pictures comprises the accounts of four journeys taken at different times in his life. The opening "Harz Journey," a quirky chronicle of his walking tour in the Harz Mountains, is the text that first made him famous. But in all four accounts, Heine, seasoned by the skepticism of a born outsider, does more than climb mountains, ford streams and cross borders. In this remarkable book, Heine propels German letters into the Modern mindset. Freud cites a few of Travel Pictures’ most humorous passages in Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious. Heine’s incomparable lyric vision lifts the book into the transcendent realm of great journey literature

The Harz journey by Heinrich Heine( Book )

443 editions published between 1828 and 2020 in 19 languages and held by 1,851 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Romanticism was not just an era of great journeys, but also a period in which the journey, in both its structure and nature, underwent profound changes. For the Romantics, travel became a philosophical metaphor, a mythical odyssey through the world and a quest for one's identity. One fine spring morning, Heinrich Heine left behind his school days at Gottingen and set out on a trip through the Harz mountains. Taverns, the transient colors of an evening sky, raucous chatter heard by chance on the road coalesce in this travelogue, offering its young author an opportunity to observe the machinations of the universe." "Much attention was drawn to seemingly irrelevant details that appeared like fitful lightning flashes and brought sudden transparency to an otherwise inaccessible universality. Nature was perceived through dusty, erudite tomes, inn signs, Latin inscriptions, writing on the doors of taverns and churches, codicils of rules and regulations - the entire system of laws that sought to capture life and give it expression. In the wake of the Romantic fascination with the literary wayfarer motif that had inspired writers such as Sterne and Goethe, Heine's series of travel vignettes are poetic, immediate, and filled with random epiphanies. Much more than a mere exercise in lyrical reflection, The Harz Journey is an ironic critique of man and society rendered with the delicate brilliance of a prose poem."--BOOK JACKET

Ludwig Börne : a memorial by Heinrich Heine( )

66 editions published between 1840 and 2017 in 5 languages and held by 789 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1840, Heinrich Heine, the major German poet of Jewish origin of the age, published a book on Ludwig Borne, the major German political writer of Jewish origin of the period, who had died three years before. Regarded by Heine and others as his best-written book, it was also his most disastrously conceived. Intended to recover the high ground of revolutionary principle and philosophy against the attacks mounted on him by Borne and his supporters, the book was instead met by a storm of outrage from which it seemed Heine's reputation might never recover. In the course of time, the evaluation was reversed; Heine was increasingly celebrated as a true herald of revolution. His vocabulary of Hellenism and Nazarenism, employed for the first time in Borne, was transmitted into English usage by Matthew Arnold. But Borne itself is Heine's only major work that has never been fully translated into English. The commentary to the edition clarifies the conflict between the two most prominent German-Jewish public intellectuals of their time, corrects the misapprehensions constantly in circulation about their relationship and the book, and reveals the many peculiarities of the text."--Publisher's website
