Tribal sculpture : masterpieces from Africa, South East Asia, and the Pacific in the Barbier Mueller Museum by Collection Barbier-Müller( Book )

15 editions published in 1995 in English and German and held by 437 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The quality and variety of the Barbier-Mueller collection of ethnic sculpture are astonishing, and only the finest pieces were selected for this all-color, oversize book. These striking pieces came from a vast number of small local cultures, of almost infinite variety, from an enormous expanse of the Old World, more specifically from Africa, Indonesia, especially the tribal areas - today known as Irian Jaya and New Guinea. Due to their ritual use, the rigors of tropical climates and the depradations of missionaries and conquerors, fine pieces have always been a rarity, as they were generally linked to the universal requirements of statehood and religion. Some remarkable pieces, however, did make up part of daily life

Provenance : twelve collectors of ethnographic art in England, 1760-1990 by Hermione Waterfield( Book )

12 editions published between 2006 and 2010 in English and held by 156 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Detailed biographies describe the lives of twelve collectors of tribal art in Britain, active between 1770 and 1990. These men were rarely field collectors and only occasional travellers, but they were vigorous hunters, for whom the pursuit, handling and possession of such objects was what mattered. The climax of the period of collecting from around 1880 to 1960 coincided with the maximum extent of Empire, when legions of explorers, missionaries, administrators, traders and military personnel brought back to Britain an inexhaustible quantity of exotic material. The sources for the collections included most of Africa, the Americas and the Pacific, as well as tribal societies in Asia. --Publisher
