At such establishments customers could hire the services of courtesans and one girl in particular, named Koharu, is the subject of much gossip. Despite having a loving wife and two children, the paper merchant Jihē has fallen in love with her and has spent so much money on visiting her that his business faces fanancial ruin. Jihē's rival, the wealthy merchant Tahē, however, has made arrangements to redeem Koharu's contract so that she can be his wife.
