Symphony #3 ; Elegy ; Lament for Beowulf by
Howard Hanson(
)
7 editions published in 1991 in English and No Linguistic content and held by 376 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Hanson described his symphony as "large-proportioned" and "full-throated"--True estimates of melodic curves, dynamic thrusts, and ripeness of color that yield a music of discernment and craftsmanship. Tonality is the king in this musical court, dressed in modal array. One senses a religious fervor throughout the score. It has emotional impact; it rings true. In the Hanson symphony there is no false posturing. It is music with a wonderful rapport of style, finish, and romantic beauty. The Elegy in Memory of My Friend Serge Koussevitzky represents a long and productive association between Hanson and the Boston Symphony. A suave, flowing theme for strings opens the Elegy and at once sets the mood of the work. Although scoring for full orchestra, Hanson treats his musical forces with the utmost economy. Dramatic utterances in which the brass figure prominently alternate with warmly expressive string writing. The work swells to a mighty climax and concludes in a hushed phrase played by the upper strings. The Lament for Beowulf was, in the words of the composer, "to realize in the music the austerity and stoicism and the heroic atmosphere of the poem. This is true Anglo-Saxon poetry and may well serve as a basis for music composed by an American ..." Musically, the work follows the text, the following précis of which Hanson provides: "There is a brief picture of the great burial mound by the sea on which the funeral pyre of the hero is built. A great beacon mound is constructed and on it are placed the trophies of the hero, mementos of his famous battles and victories. The women lament as the mound is built by the warriors. Then follows an episode in which the wife of the hero and her handmaidens voice their grief. The young warriors in a group surround the bier of their dead king and tell of his prowess. The work ends with the eulogy of the great hero." - Booklet in container
