Berkeley's thought by George Sotiros Pappas( Book )

8 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 426 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this account of Bishop George Berkeley's epistemological and metaphysical theories, George S. Pappas seeks to determine precisely what doctrines the philosopher held and what arguments he put forward to support them. Specifically, Pappas overturns accepted opinions about Berkeley's famous attack on the Lockean doctrine of abstract ideas. Berkeley's criticism of these ideas had been thought relevant only to his views on language and to his nominalism; Pappas persuasively argues that Berkeley's ideas about abstraction are crucial to nearly all the fundamental principles that he defends."--Jacket
Philosophical problems and arguments; an introduction by James W Cornman( Book )

26 editions published between 1982 and 1992 in English and held by 408 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Widely used by instructors who emphasize the logical structure of philosophical theories and the dialectical play of argument, this popular work provides clear, reliable, and up-to-date discussions of central philosophical debates. The fourth edition incorporates major revisions--the first since 1982--and features an extensive change in content. Every chapter has been reworked to improve its organization, to make it more accessible and engaging to the student, and to reflect recent discussions

A world of a particulars: A trope solution to the problem of universals by Michael Cooper LaBossiere( )

1 edition published in 1993 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

My proposed solution to the problem of sameness is a resemblance mechanism which groups entities into resemblance classes. As such, my view stands in direct competition with class nominalism and resemblance nominalism. While these two views have an initial advantage of ontological economy, their economy turns out to be a false economy for both views are found to lack the ontological resources to serve as adequate solutions to the problem. As such, I accept properties as part of my proposed solution to the problem of sameness, which places it in direct competition with theories involving transcdendent universals and those involving immanent universals. Due to the difficulties (primarily having to do with space and time) that both types of universals suffer from, I conclude that properties are best taken as particulars and not universals

Reid's philosophy of mind by Ryan Nichols( )

1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Employing the faculty of perception marks the only possible means by which we can gather knowledge of our environment. Despite this, in roughly the century and a half leading up to Reid's Intellectual Powers, philosophers had widely turned from viewing this wondrous faculty as our companion in the quest for knowledge. Descartes, along with Galileo and Gassendi, begins a trend which, as Reid sees it, culminates in Hume. These thinkers, in increasing degrees, began to harbor a suspicion that our senses cannot be trusted with any epistemologically important responsibilities. This attitude was grounded upon a belief that the immediate objects of perceptual states are not external objects, but rather ideas and impressions
