The American college; a psychological and social interpretation of the higher learning by Nevitt Sanford( Book )

17 editions published between 1962 and 1967 in English and held by 1,335 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Fundamentally, education should look to the future. It should prepare its students to live in a world of new possibilities and of new dangers. To do so, it must itself be able to change and develop rationally. A central thesis of this stimulating book is that scientific method, more than any other procedure known to man, provides the basis for intelligent change: for change based on systematic knowledge rather than on improvisation, hunch, or dogma. This rich, comprehensive volume charts the way into relatively unexplored territory. The chart is sufficiently detailed to reveal the diverse, interesting terrain as well as the rich ore that has already been discovered in this area by systematic research. It contains more information about and more insightful discussion of the varied aspects of the American college than has been available hitherto. It is a splendid beginning; it highlights what needs to be done as well as what has been done"--Foreword. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)

Social issues and policy review( )

in English and held by 1,153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The mission of Social Issues and Policy Review (SIPR) is to provide state of the art and timely theoretical and empirical reviews of topics and programs of research that are directly relevant to understanding and addressing social issues and public policy. SIPR, like other review volumes (e.g., Annual Review of Psychology and Advances in Experimental Social Psychology) is formally considered a periodical. Papers will be accessible and relevant to a broad audience and will normally be based on a program of research. Works in SIPR will represent perspectives directly relevant to the psychological study of social issues and public policy. Contributions are expected to be review papers that present a strong scholarly foundation and consider how research and theory can inform social issues and policy or articulate the implication of social issues and public policy for theory and research. Works may relate to controversial current issues, but they must be well grounded in theory and research, normally involving work in the behavioral sciences, and present fair and unbiased portrayals of the issues. SIPR is not limited to a particular point of view, political or social ideology, geographic area of focus, or disciplinary orientation. It encompasses areas of global concern. SIPR volumes are nonthematic; that is, the papers within each volume will focus on a variety of topics. SIPR is available as part of a subscription to SPSSI's flagship publication, Journal of Social Issues (JSI), and also includes a subscription to Analyses of Social Issues and Public Policy (ASAP)."--Wiley Online Library
Theory and research on small groups by R. Scott Tindale( )

8 editions published between 1998 and 2013 in English and held by 1,024 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Research on small groups played an important role in the early formulation of social psychology. By the 1970s, however, the field had lost the interest of most social psychologists. Theory and Research on Small Groups reintegrates that work back into the mainstream of social psychology. The more recent ̀€issues-oriented' approach has not only resulted in many interesting findings-it has also applied basic social psychological theory in new ways and, moreover, led to new theoretical developments that deserve more attention. This volume, which features the work of esteemed researchers from around the world, is a bountiful resource worthy of notice by all social psychologists

"The scheme, then, is to proceed, chapter by chapter, in terms of a psychological orientation. I shall attempt an introductory sketch, through six chapters, from my own viewpoint. Then in Part II I shall attempt to look systematically at the dangers, the troublespots of the world. As I come to each snag, each difficulty, I will pose a critical question horn which I hope an expert can make his own departure, both answering my question and carrying, forward the thought. In this way we may see more clearly the context within which the next question must be posed. In Part III the same method of question and answer will be used, looking to the constructive suggestions which experts have to offer. It will, then, be my task again at the conclusion of the book to integrate what these many experts have offered"--Book. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
