An experiment in criticism by C. S Lewis( Book )

1 edition published in 1961 in English and held by 1,458 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Professor Lewis believed that literature exists above all for the joy of the reader and that books should be judged by the kind of reading they invite. He doubted the use of strictly evaluative criticism, especially its condemnations. Literary criticism is traditionally employed in judging books, and 'bad taste' is thought of as a taste for bad books. Professor Lewis' experiment consists in reversing the process, and judging literature itself by the way men read it. He defined a good book as one which can be read in a certain way, a bad book as one which can only be read in another. He was therefore mainly preoccupied with the notion of good reading: and he showed that this, in its surrender to the work on which it is engaged, has something in common with love, with moral action, and with intellectual achievement. In good reading we should be concerned less in altering our own opinions than in entering fully into the opinions of others; "in reading great literature I become a thousand men and yet remain myself". As with all that Professor Lewis wrote, the arguments are stimulating and the examples apt"--Publisher description

The future does not compute : transcending the machines in our midst by Steve Talbott( Book )

1 edition published in 1995 in English and held by 820 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Many pundits tell you that the computer is ushering us toward a new Golden Age of Information. A few tell you that the computer is destroying everything worthwhile in our culture. But almost no one tells you what Stephen L. Talbott shows in this surprising book: the intelligent machine gathers its menacing powers from hidden places within you and me. It does so, that is, as long as we gaze into our screens and tap on our keyboards while less than fully conscious of the subtle influences passing through the interface." "After reading The Future Does Not Compute, you will never again be able to sit in front of your computer with quite the same glazed stare."--Jacket

"Owen Barfield was one of the most original and stimulating thinkers of the twentieth century, the man whose writings have won praise from figures as diverse as T.S. Eliot and Saul Bellow, Walter de la Mare and Howard Nemeroc, W.H. Auden and Marshall McLuhan. This comprehensive overview supplements major selections with numerous short supporting passages from the whole corpus of his writings and provides a glossary of Barfieldian terms and useful primary and secondary bibliographies. A respected philosopher, jurist, and student of the nature of language and human consciousness, Owen Barfield's many books published by Wesleyan include Saving the Appearances (1988), Poetic Diction (1984), and Worlds Apart (1971). He lived in East Sussex, England, at the time of his death in 1997 at the age of 99. Barfield was a writer who gained a discriminating and dedicated readership on both sides of the Atlantic, but especially in the United States."--Publisher description
Miracles : a preliminary study by C. S Lewis( Book )

1 edition published in 1947 in English and held by 314 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is intended as a preliminary to historical inquiry. I am not a trained historian and I shall not examine the historical evidence for the Christian miracles. My effort is to put my readers in a position to do so. It is no use going to the texts until we have some idea about the possibility or probability of the miraculous. Those who assume that miracles cannot happen are merely wasting their time by looking into the texts: we know in advance what results they will find for they have begun by begging the question."--The scope of this book
The traveller by Walter De la Mare( Book )
