The growth of "New London" in suburban Middlesex (1918-1945) and the response of the Church of England by Rex Walford( )

5 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 930 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This groundbreaking book sheds much-needed light on the neglected ecclesiastical history of urban England in the twentieth century. Working from detailed field evidence Rex Walford has investigated the fate of the Church of England in suburban Middlesex (?New London? north of the Thames) between the two World Wars. Quite contrary to a widely-held view, the Anglican Church flourished and expanded in this area during this time. More Anglican Churches than cinemas were built in the Diocese of London between 1918 and 1945 and many of them were significant in architecture, liturgy and new strategie

Games in geography by Rex Walford( Book )

28 editions published between 1969 and 1981 in 3 languages and held by 325 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Six games designed for classroom use are described in this book: 1) Shopping Game; 2) Bus Service Game; 3) North Sea Gas Game; 4) Railway Pioneers Game; 5) Development Game; and 6) Export Drive Game. The description of each game comprises a separate chapter, and includes information about the general aims of the game, how the various game elements tie in with reality, equipment needed, and how to play. Some of the broad concerns with which the games deal are: 1) basic concepts and ideas within the framework of space; 2) an attempt to deal with important decision-making processes relevant to human geography; 3) factual material concerned with world geography; and, 4) structuring of geographical material into meaningful categories and classifications. The games display a wide range of complexity and can be played at varying levels by both elementary and secondary level students. Introductory chapters of the book provide some perspective through discussions of some present problems and new movements in the teaching of geography, and through an analysis of geographical gaming as a practical aspect of model theory. Later chapters describe two actual game operations, and provide a suggested sequence for developing one's own games/simulations. (Author/JLB)

Geography in British schools, 1850-2000 : making a world of difference by Rex Walford( Book )

9 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is the first book to explore the fascinating story of how geography has grown to be a major subject in the British school curriculum in the past 150 years." "Written in an accessible style, Geography in British Schools, 1850-2000 charts how geography rose to popularity on a tide of imperial enthusiasms in Victorian times and made its way into many elementary schools in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Contrrary to popular belief, many geography lessons were not dominated by the rote-learning of 'capes and bays', and some of the pioneers of the subject led the way in the use of models, visual aids and 'object lessons' in schools." "Geography in British Schools, 1850-2000 will be indispensable background reading for all those training to be geography teachers, as well as illuminating for those who are so already. It will appeal to educational and social historians as well as to the interested general reader."--BOOK JACKET
