On modern art by Paul Klee( Book )

96 editions published between 1945 and 1998 in 9 languages and held by 1,121 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Paul Klee : the Berggruen Klee collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art by Sabine Rewald( Book )

5 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 588 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The German painter Paul Klee (1879-1940) has become one of today's most popular artists. Ninety works by Klee--including drawings, watercolors, and oils, either serious, comical, capricious, or dramatic--have recently been given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by one of the postwar era's leading art dealers and collectors, Heinz Berggruen, and are now published together in this volume for the first time. The works in the distinguished Berggruen Klee Collection, now a permanent part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's holdings, span the career of the artist from his student days in Bern in the 1890s to his death in Muralto-Locarno in 1940. All aspects of Klee both as a draftsman and as a painter are illustrated in these ninety works. Paul Klee is not only one of today's most popular artists, but he is also one of the most written about. In an illuminating addition to the vast literature on Klee, Sabine Rewald opens this study with a candid interview with the artist's only son, Felix, which took place in Bern in February 1986. Accompanied by documentary and informal photographs of the Klee family, it gives pointed and witty insights into the artist's private life. It also offers a behind-the-scenes view of the Bauhaus, where Paul Klee taught and where Felix Klee was a student. Most of the ninety works in the Berggruen Klee Collection are reproduced in full-page colorplates, and each one is accompanied by an extensive entry. These entries incorporate biographical information and quotations from Klee's letters, the latter as yet unpublished in English. The book includes an extensive chronology and a bibliography." -- Provided by publisher
Candide, Zadig, and selected stories by Voltaire( Book )

1 edition published in 1961 in English and held by 585 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With Candide-a classic parody of the romantic, coming-of-age story-and the fifteen other stories in this indispensible collection, Voltaire derided the bureaucracies of his day with ruthless wit. His dissections of science, spiritual faith, legal systems, vanity, and love make him the undisputed master of social commentary
Paul Klee: the thinking eye; the notebooks of Paul Klee by Paul Klee( Book )

11 editions published between 1961 and 1964 in English and held by 510 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The writings which compose Paul Klee's theory of form production and pictorial form have the same importance and the same meaning for modern art as had Leonardo's writings which composed his theory of painting for Renaissance art. Like the latter, they do not constitute a true and proper treatise, that is to say a collection of stylistic and technical rules, but are the result of an introspective analysis which the artist engages in during his work and in the light of the experience of reality which comes to him in the course of his work. This analysis which accompanies and controls the formation of a work of art is a necessary component of the artistic process, the aim and the finality of which are brought to light by it . . ." So writes Giulio Carlo Argan in his Preface to this first volume of Klee's notebooks. The backbone of his Bauhaus courses was provided by the lecture notes contained in 'Contributions to a Theory of Pictorial Form' which are here published in their entirety. From more than 2,500 pages of the notebooks (consisting of memoranda, teaching projects, constructive drawings, and sketches for his pictures) it has been possible to reconstruct additional courses of instruction. Also included are the 'Creative Credo', 'Ways of Nature Study', the Jena lecture of 1924 and the essay' Exact Experiments in the Realm of Art'. The volume includes a magnificent collection of over one thousand drawings which illustrate the notes, as well as 188 half-tone illustrations, eight of these reproduced in full color
Paul Klee by Donald Wigal( )

2 editions published in 2011 in French and held by 476 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

À l'Expressionisme allemand, i

Paul Klee by Jean-Louis Ferrier( Book )

3 editions published in 1999 in English and French and held by 415 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Jean-Louis Ferrier's highly original interpretation offers us a new point of entrance into Paul Klee's playful, mysterious world. Of the artist's corpus of 8,926 works, 140 are illustrated here. Born into a family of musicians, Klee long hesitated between painting and the violin, and music remained a major source of inspiration. His quest to geometrize the subject and his work on materials, line and colour proved seminal. He began teaching at the Bauhaus in 1920, making a major contribution to the development of the visual arts. To this distinguished teaching career we owe his celebrated theoretical works, notably the Pedagogical Sketch Book."--Jacket

Paul Klee's pictorial writing by Kathryn Porter Aichele( Book )

3 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 386 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Paul Klee's Pictorial Writing examines the artist's appropriation of verbal signs, literary texts, and written scripts in his pictorial works. K. Porter Aichele's study is the first to examine how linguistic symbols function in Klee's work and what they mean. Reconstructing the artist's rich cultural milieu from his diaries, letters, lecture notes, and visual allusions, Aichele shows how these sources provide the framework for fresh interpretations of works ranging from letter forms in pictorial settings to invented visual texts. Historically contextualized and interpreted as pictorial writing, Klee's familiar line drawings are shown to be a radical reinterpretation of the ut pictora poesis tradition of visual texts that question whether there is a substantive difference between writing and drawing. Aichele's multilayered readings of works from every decade of Klee's career demonstrate that the artist's doubly coded language was his most far-reaching contribution to the aesthetics of modernism."--Jacket

Paul Klee and the decorative in modern art by Jenny Anger( Book )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 351 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"One of the goals of modernism was the representation of the essence of art, or pure form. In this study, Jenny Anger examines Paul Klee's attitude toward and use of the decorative. She shows that the decorative, including its gendered associations, significantly informed Klee's art production, his exhibiting strategies, his critical response, and the discursive construction of his work for public consumption. She also compares his work with that of another major modernist, Henri Matisse, to confirm the critical role of the decorative in modernism. Finally, Anger explores the relevance of the decorative for contemporary, and especially women, artists."--Jacket
