(On) Searle on conversation by John R Searle( )

20 editions published between 1991 and 1992 in English and held by 1,667 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At an international conference held in 1981 at the Universidada Estudual of Campinas (Brazil), a controversial lecture was given by John Searle which presented two conceptual theses: that conversation does not have an intrinsic structure about which a relevant theory can be formulated, and that conversations are not subject to (constitutive) rules. This lecture was first published in 1986 under the title "Notes on Conversation", and was revised several times afterwards. The present volume offers the most recent version. Because of the importance of the article for conversation analysis, and fo
Contexts of understanding by Herman Parret( )

Peirce and value theory : on Peircian ethics and aesthetics by Herman Parret( )

17 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 1,582 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Most of the essays collected in this book were presented at the Charles S. Peirce Sesquicentennial Congress (Harvard University, September 1989). The volume is devoted to themes within Peirce's value theory and offers a comprehensive view of less known aspects of his influential philosophy, in particular Peirce's work on ethics and aesthetics. The book is divided in four sections. Section I discusses the status of ethics as a normative science and its relation with logic; some applications are presented, e.g. in the field of bioethics. Section II investigates the specific position of Peircean aesthetics with regard to classical American philosophy, especially Buchler, to Husserlian phenomenology, and to European structuralism (Saussure, Jakobson). Section III contains papers on internal aspects of Peirce's aesthetics and its place in his thought. The final section presents applications of Peirce's aesthetic theory: analyses of visual art (mainly paintings), of literary texts and of musical meaning
Semiotics and pragmatics : an evaluative comparison of conceptual frameworks by Herman Parret( )

14 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 1,500 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Looking at the 'semiotic landscape' - the panorama of constituted semiotics - two traditions seem to have developed separately and without interpenetration. Anglo-Saxon semioticians consider the Peircean framework to provide the adequate conceptual apparatus, whereas so-called 'Continental' semioticians refer to the sign theory in Saussure and in its interpretation by Hjelmslev (for instance, the Ecole semiotique de Paris). Evaluating each other's projects, methods, and results could lead to a balanced view. The purpose of this monograph is to get the best out of the adequate insights from both sides, and to make suggestions how the semioticians from the Peircean or Saussuro-Hjelmslevian school can be removed from their isolationist positions. A comparison and homologation of these two orientations will be carried out from the angle of the impact of pragmaticism on both semiotic orientations. How intentionality, action, conventionality, interlocution are integrated in both orientations will be given particular emphasis. -- Back cover
Seduction, community, speech : a festschrift for Herman Parret by Frank Brisard( )

12 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 1,403 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume unites various contributions reflecting the intellectual interests exhibited by Professor Herman Parret (Institute of Philosophy, Leuven), who has continued to observe, and often critically assess, ongoing developments in pragmatics throughout his career. In fact, Parret's contributions to philosophical and empirical/linguistic pragmatics present substantive proposals in the epistemics of communication, while simultaneously offering meta-comments on the ideological premises of extant pragmatic analyses. In a lengthy introduction, an overview is provided of his achievements in promoting an integrated, "maximalist" pragmatics, as well as of the links between his own work in philosophy of language and in semiotics and aesthetics. The remaining 12 essays address relevant pragmatic themes or look into the relation between pragmatics and neighboring disciplines. They deal with grammatical deixis (Brisard, Ikegami) and mood (van der Auwera & Schalley), performativity (Harnish, Holdcroft), speech-act types and their praxeological dimensions (Roulet, Van Overbeke), Wittgensteinian language games (Marques, Parisi), cultural and intercultural identities (Vandenabeele, Verschueren), and the visual arts (Wildgen)

20 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 1,261 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This impressive volume attempts to make an assessment of past achievements, but also to open up new perspectives in the field of pragmatics, exactly ten years after the publication of Searle's seminal Speech Acts. This rich collection presents an unrivaled diversity of topics and approaches united by the possibilities and limitations generic to the field of pragmatics

Le sublime du quotidien by Herman Parret( )

11 editions published in 1988 in French and held by 1,173 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

De betekenis als verhaal : semiotische opstellen by A.J Greimas( )

3 editions published in 1991 in 3 languages and held by 342 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The aesthetics of communication : pragmatics and beyond by Herman Parret( Book )

12 editions published between 1993 and 1997 in 3 languages and held by 213 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The dominant paradigm in the sciences of language conceives the subject-in-community as a truth-sayer, a communicator, and a player-economist. The major ontology of the human community reconstructs being-together as a system of interactions and transactions subject to the rules of economic rationality and, as a consequence, the community as source and target of finite strategical games. The primordial value then is the circulation of information and ideal communication is favored by the truth-functional status of our discourses. However, this dominant ontology has a few cracks. This is where the aesthetic dimension intrudes, establishing here and there the blink of an eye, shattering the economic, communicational, and truth-saying phantasm, scattering the field of being-together, fragmenting it. These aesthetic fringes conduct themselves according to the isotopy of blossoming, of rupture and fracture, of thresholds and discontinuity. Their effect is one of bedazzlement, trembling, shaking, upheaval, lightheadedness. Infinite games in conversation, the musicality of voices, understanding by flair and tact, the temporariness of nostalgic memory, reasonable pathos, are what has been emphasized in this book. -- Publisher description

Karel Appel, un geste de couleur = Karel Appel, a gesture of colour by Jean-François Lyotard( Book )

3 editions published in 2009 in French and held by 179 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Karel Appel. A gesture of colour is the first of a series of five volumes, bringing together the most important writings of Jean-François Lyotard (1924-1998) on contemporary art and artists. The book he devoted to the art of Karel Appel (1921-2006) is without doubt one of the most complete and inspired texts of all the writing included in the series. Neither the original French manuscript nor the English translation has ever been published before, and their presentation face to face should constitute a considerable plus. In this book, Lyotard presents Karel Appel's "matterism" as an offer of presence, presence deferred -- it is the visual where every predicate is suspended, the visual touched, "gesture" of colour more than property of colour, appearance at the edge of the abyss. Christine Buci-Glucksmann's epilogue situates Karel Appel. A gesture of colour within the whole of Lyotard's writings on art and his subsequent work."--P. [4] of cover
