9 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 797 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Light: Physical and Biological Action provides an introduction to the significant problems that are usually considered in photobiology. This book covers a variety of topics, including photosensitization, phototropism, phototaxis, photosynthesis, bioluminescence, diurnal rhythms, and the measurement of molecular excitation by light. Organized into five chapters, this book begins with an overview of the characteristics of light from a purely physical and historical viewpoint. This text then discusses the various types of radiation, including temperature or thermal radiation, photoluminesc

The soil--plant system in relation to inorganic nutrition by
Maurice Fried(
Book
)
9 editions published between 1967 and 1972 in English and held by 631 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Soil-Plant System in Relation to Inorganic Nutrition focuses on the soil-plant system in relation to the inorganic nutrition of plants. More specifically, the book investigates the dynamics of ion uptake in relation to those physical and chemical processes that must be considered both in understanding any observation made on the soil-plant system and in predicting the results of any stress placed on the system. This volume is organized into two parts encompassing seven chapters and begins with an overview of the inorganic nutrition of plants grown in the soil-plant system. This book t

Ecology of Halophytes documents the proceedings of a symposium on the ecology of halophytes sponsored by the Physiological Ecology section of the Ecological Society of America, and held as a portion of the American Institute of Biological Sciences meetings in August 1972. The book considers the fundamentals of distribution, anatomy, and physiology of halophytes. It provides an overview of the role of the halophyte in ecosystems in various parts of the world. A section on habitat associations of halophytes considers the relation of the plants to other fauna and flora in natural systems. A

Fire in North American tallgrass prairies(
Book
)
4 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 511 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The product of a 1987 symposium, "Fire in North American Grasslands," held in Columbus, Ohio, and sponsored by the Ecological and the Botanical Societies of America, this book is an excellent compilation of knowledge on the ecological role of fire in grasslands. Since this book's focus is limited to the tallgrass prairie, the effects of fire in this region are treated more completely than in H.A. Wright and A.W. Bailey's Fire Ecology: United States and Southern Canada (CH, Sep'82), which examines fire in substantially more vegetation types in the US and southern Canada. Chapters progress from the historical relationships of fire and grazing, into specific fire effects on individual plants and plant communities, to the broader perspective of fire impacts on ecosystem and landscape patterns. A chapter on the influence of fire on the underground system, namely plant roots, nutrient cycles, and soil biota, is especially valuable. The text is well edited with good reference sources. Users will include upper-division undergraduate and graduate students, plant ecologists, fire managers, and range resource professionals. Recommended for academic and public libraries. -M.J. Zwolinski, University of Arizona--Choice Review

Radiation, radioactivity, and insects by
R. D O'Brien(
Book
)
8 editions published in 1964 in English and held by 494 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is intended for two audiences. One is made u of entomologists and other biologists who want to know the way in which research with radiation and radioisotopes has advanced our understanding of insects, and what entomological problems of their own could be profitably attacked with such techniques. The second audience comprise those knowledgeable in work with irradiation and radioisotopes who would like a comprehensive account of what has been done with insects, and perhaps would like to know for what kinds of problems the insect is a suitable organism
