La religion vécue : les laïcs dans l'Europe moderne : [actes du colloque, Prato, Monash university, 3-4 juillet 2010] by Laurence Croq( )

3 editions published in 2013 in French and held by 135 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Between Aix-en-Provence and Geneva from Paris to Utrecht, this book renews the traditional approaches of religious history in terms of social history in the urban context, offering a social history of religion. The faithful are not thought of as solitary individuals in their relationship with God and the clergy, but as beings belonging to a plurality of bodies. Their religious identity is one of their corporate identities are many (family, work, civic, etc.). Based on the concept of incorporation, the book develops religion as a dimension of the experience of men and women who belong to several communities. How does one reconcile membership of groups that are apparently incompatible? How, too, does one decide to leave a body for the benefit of another, or through individualized pipes? By correlating the Protestant and Catholic worlds, this book discusses religion in the lives of the citizens of Western Europe

A young man begins a journey from Saudi Arabia, believing it will end with his death in England. If his mission succeeds, he will go to his god a martyr - and many innocents will die with him. For David Banks, an armed protection officer, charged with neutralizing the threat to London's safety, his role is no longer clear-cut: one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter: dangerous distinctions to a police officer with his finger on the trigger. Soon the two men's paths will cross. Before then, their commitment will be shaken by the journeys that take them there. The suicide bomber and the policeman will have cause to question the roads they've chosen. Win or lose, neither will be the same again
I am no inconsiderable shop-keeper in this town : Swift and his Dublin printers of the 1720's : Edward Waters, John Harding and Sarah Harding by Craig Francis Pett( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 58 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Swift's political writing was at its most subversive and presented the greatest risk to his printers when as Dean of St. Patrick's in Dublin in the 1720's he embarked upon a campaign of defending Irish liberties. His pamphlets during this period were intended to rally the people of Ireland against English oppressions. In writing them Swift also sought to reassert himself over his Whig enemies who were then in government in Westminster. It was a period of violent prosecutions, imprisonments and courtroom warring between judges and juries, and it was a period that exacted a human cost. This thesis is a study of Swift's working relationships with the Dublin printing industry during this time. Always writing either anonymously or under a pseudonym, Swift worked with printers who were from the lowest ranks of the industry. These were printers who were more prepared to run the risk of publication and bear the brunt of any prosecution. The first of these printers was Edward Waters. In May 1720, Waters printed Swift's "A Proposal for theUniversal Use of Irish Manufacture" and was subsequently prosecuted in a case that was protracted over fifteen months. The second was John Harding, who printed the five pamphlets Swift wrote in 1724 under the pseudonym M.B. Drapier. Harding was prosecuted for the fourth of those pamphlets and died a few months afterwards from the effects of his imprisonment. The third was Harding's widow, Sarah Harding, who as a mother of two continued to print occasionally for Swift without ever receiving the support from him that can be said to have been owing to her. This thesis is written from the perspective of the printers. It offers new evidence with regard to the lives and careers of the printers and Swift's conduct in relation to them
Comfort and judgement : nineteenth-century advice manuals and the scripting of Australian identity by Gene Bawden( Book )

3 editions published between 2015 and 2019 in English and held by 55 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

'My journey to this book is the culmination of a long-held fascination with the history and currency of Australia's domestic interior. Having been born in a remote, desert-bound Queensland town, I have felt its power as a solace; a retreat from the extremities of the Australian environment. The interior provided a zone in which we were kept safe, but so too were our traditions, behaviours and belief systems. As I sifted through the pages of Australia's nineteenth-century advice manuals on the subject, featuring caverns of formal furniture suites, patterned carpet, velvet drapes, china cabinets, occasional tables, and collections of ornaments all awkwardly coalescing in spaces impregnated with the acrid waft of furniture polish, I was struck by the continuum of the interior and its purpose; as a refuge to induce both comfort and confidence.' Since the earliest days of colonisation white Australians have protectively swaddled themselves in the domestic interior. Faced with a disconcerting and entirely alien environment, the replication of English interiors provided the colony's settler communities with the tether they sought to a guiding homeland and its comforting rules and practices. Though Australian identity is aligned, truthfully or otherwise, to the `masculine' exterior: the bush, the outback and the beach, women were imperative to settler communities, and so too were the interiors they created. Comfort and Judgement provides a richer, deeper understanding of the Australian home than has been realised before
