Chinese Communist Politics in Action by A. Doak Barnett( Book )

4 editions published between 1969 and 1970 in English and Undetermined and held by 895 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

These pioneering studies, representative of the best research now being done on China by a new generation of young scholars, focus on particular aspects of the Chinese Communist political system and the course of its development. By analyzing the characteristics of the system at the subnational level, as it affects local areas and particular groups, they attempt to provide new insights into the nature of the system as a whole. At the same time they move toward more effectively integrating China studies into the mainstream of political science
The limits of change : essays on conservative alternatives in Republican China by Charlotte Furth( Book )

6 editions published in 1976 in English and held by 665 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Limits of Change disputes the impression that the conservative ideas and styles of China's Republican period were neither strong nor persuasive enough to counter the ideas or the revolution of Mao. As the contributors to the book point out, these conservative movements reflected a modern outlook and shared a framework of common concepts with the radical movements they opposed. In these essays we see the broad range of responses that conservatism in the Republican period took--from a new nativist historical consciousness, to quasi-Fascist theories of political mobilization, to efforts at a revival of Confucianism as a moral faith. Individual writers analyze the early Republican National Essence movement, the new Confucian humanism of the 1920s and afterwards, political ideology under Republican military dictatorships, and the ideas of modern literary conservatives. Two major interpretive essays place Chinese trends in the context of worldwide conservative responses to industrialization, political modernism, and the challenge of secularism. Through its far-reaching, detailed, and sympathetic assessment of the role of conservative ideology in China's modern intellectual experience, Limits of Change makes a distinguished contribution to Chinese studies

The Anthropology of Taiwanese society by Emily Martin( Book )

5 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 440 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume represents the state of the art of anthropology in Taiwan, summing up more than twenty years of fieldwork and publication. It also contains the fullest and best integrated set of anthropological data we have for any region of China, for any period of history. It deals directly with the difficult question that faces China anthropologists - in what sense is Taiwan a part of China? Should Taiwan be primarily described as a natural end product of a long cultural tradition (a Chinese province), or should it be primarily described as a product of external factors (a small, rapidly developing society with the world's densest population, uniquely situated in the world economy)? For other anthropologists, the volume contains data and analysis that pertain to many current problems: the relationship between ethnicity and social class, the role of historical factors in anthropological explanation, the interaction between religious activities and state control, and the interplay between national and local political and economic systems.--Publisher description
