The essential Comte; selected from Cours de philosophie positive by Auguste Comte( Book )

435 editions published between 1830 and 2015 in 7 languages and held by 2,813 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Auguste Comte proclaimed himself the founder of sociology and, on the whole, this claim is accepted. His most important work is the six-volume Cours de Philosophie Positive of which this present book is a selective abridgement. Comte, as this selection shows, was a methodological visionary. He was an eminently successful terminological innovator and to him we owe not only 'sociology' and 'positivism' but also 'biology' and 'altruism'. Professor Andreski, in his lucid introduction, assesses Comte's place under six headings, as

This edition of the French philosopher Auguste Comte's (1798-1857) early essays shows Comte at the heart of the political and intellectual debates of Restoration France. He forged the central features of his philosophical system in response to the central challenge of the 1820s. The author aims to show how Comte grappled with problems that confronted liberals and counter-revolutionaries alike, and identifies the novelty of his solution
The correspondence of John Stuart Mill and Auguste Comte by John Stuart Mill( Book )

3 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 290 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume presents eighty-nine letters exchanged between John Stuart Mill and Auguste Comte between 1841 and 1847. They address important issues of the mid-nineteenth century in philosophy, science, economics, and politics. Cumulatively, these letters provide a humanistic view of Western Europe and its social problems. They add valuable perspective to what we know about the work of Mill and Comte, in a critical period of English and French thought. The correspondence begins with an admiring letter from Mill who considers himself a positivist at the tune and writes to Comte as to an elder colleague. A close friendship developed, in the course of which they discussed matters of common concern. Their understanding extends to personal experiences, including their respective mental crises at an early age. The opinions expressed about their contemporaries are significant and include comments on Thomas Carlyle, John and Sarah Austin, and Alexander Bain, on philosophers and major authors in France, Germany, and Italy. Mill and Comte eventually encountered issues on which they could not come to consensus, especially the equality of women. While Mill was an ardent defender of women's rights, Comte supported the traditional hierarchy that endowed men with social and political superiority

Auguste Comte and positivism : the essential writings by Auguste Comte( Book )

4 editions published between 1975 and 2010 in English and held by 153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Although Auguste Comte is conventionally acknowledged as one of the founders of sociology and as a key representative of positivism, few new editions of his writings have been published in the English language in this century. He has become virtually dissociated from the history of modern positivism and the most recent debates about it. Gertrud Lenzer maintains that the work of Comte is, for better or for worse, essential to an understanding of the modern period of positivism. Three significant additions have been made to this edition: a new introduction by the editor, a new postscript - taken from the twelfth Auguste Comte Memorial Trust Lecture - also by the editor, as well as Comte's "Conclusion of the Whole Work of the System of Positive Polity" taken from the fourth volume of his seminal work."--Jacket
