"With this memoir of poignant photographs, David Douglas Duncan has now completed a twenty-year long series of intimate works on a near-legendary neighbour, Picasso ... This final book is a photographic tour de force -- there are no captions -- in which Duncan takes us on a personally conducted visit to Picasso's last studio-home in Mougins, on the French Riviera ... The Silent Studio contains all of the canvases Pablo Picasso painted of Jacqueline and gave to her (seen together only in this book), including probably the most haunting portrait of the twentieth century." --

This is war! : a photo-narrative of the Korean War by David Douglas Duncan( Book )

8 editions published between 1951 and 1990 in English and held by 335 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This unique volume is a narrative of the courage and grimness, the ordeal and loyalty, of first-class fighting men, told through a series of captionless photographs. The photographer-author, and ex-Marine, was so much a member of each group shown here in action that the fighting men were completely unaware that they were being photographed. It was a near-miracle that Duncan escaped with his own life, since he took pictures of charging men from in front of them, of men being killed beside him. Duncan's story is divided into three parts. Each group of photographs is preceded by text that makes it possible for the reader to understand the circumstances and setting of each picture. There is no need for captions: the photographs themselves tell the story. In the beginning of the book, a background is provided that carries the reader from the first day of the Korean War, on June 25, 1950, up to August of 1950, when the picture story opens. -- BOOK JACKET
