Cellular aluminum for use in energy dissipation systems by S. G Lipson( Book )

5 editions published in 1964 in English and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The compressive properties of cast cellular aluminum alloy cylinders were studied. The principal criterion for material evaluation was high energy absorption at uniform levels of loading through substantially complete destruction of the material. The effects of alloy composition, cell structure, heat treatment, and length/diameter (l/d) ratio were studied. The most promising material was a cast 7075 aluminum alloy, heat treated to high hardness levels

A FLOW ANALOG FOR EXPLOSIVE BONDING( Book )

2 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Consideration of the microstructure of the explosive bond in terms of the generation of vortex periodicity in the wake of the reentrant jet was used to yield a description of the mechanism of formation of the wavy interface. The analogy with aero- and hydrodynamic flows is consistent experimentally with observations in the latter systems in terms of flow patterns and characteristic dimensions. Reynolds numbers characteristic of the various flow regimes in the wake were measured experimentally and used as a quantitative criterion for describing the interface geometry. Thus, the hydrodynamic analogy is developed into a convenient method in practical applications of explosive bonding. (Author)

Stress Corrosion Tests for Aluminum Alloys by Joseph J Gordon( Book )

2 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Two techniques have been studied for the purpose of developing improved stress corrosion tests for 5083 and 7039 alloys. These are: (1) chemical and electrochemical pretreatments of specimens using a sodium chloride solution prior to alternate immersion (AI); and (2) the use of a salt spray test as a more rapid stress corrosion test method. In addition, AI stress corrosion data have been obtained on 5083-H115 forged material. The results of tests using the chemical and the electrochemical pretreatments indicate that the time to failure of 5083 and 7039 alloys in AI are unaffected. Electrochemical pretreatments in nitric acid solution appear to be nondiscriminatory in achieving significant reductions in failure times on 5083 alloy. The use of salt spray on 5083-H131 has no effect on reducing the median time to failure. However, significant reductions in failure time are achieved with the use of salt spray on 7039-T6 alloy when the results are compared with those obtained from AI. Forged 5083-H115 plate shows no susceptibility to stress corrosion after 12 to 15 months' exposure to AI. The use of thermal stabilization treatments on this alloy significantly increases susceptibility to stress corrosion. (Author)
MAIDS Study, TMDE Task 05 - Information Dynamics. Computer Software: Problems and Possible Solutions( Book )

1 edition published in 1973 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Software systems fail when delivered, during acceptance testing, and throughout the life of the systems. The reasons for their failure are explored and means to prevent or overcome these problems are suggested. The latter include development and use of good documentation standards; use of improved software design techniques (described as defensive programming) and of good high level languages; design of adequate tests concurrent with the software design process; and adequate preparation for hardware/software integration. A Study of Pressure Time Curves for Small Caliber Ammunition( Book )

2 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Computers have already been used to fingerprint ammunition. Geene states that his model provides an "aid in defining more meaningful acceptance criteria for small arms propellants." Geene's study was aimed at illuminating the reasons for ammunition causing weapon performance failures after passing acceptance tests. Geene's "Energy Equation" model does provide some insights into propellant burn and projectile dynamics, however his model does not match the data very well. Instead of beginning our work by using Geene's model as a springboard, our approach has been to develop a set of non-linear differential equations which describe the dynamics of the physical system. The simulation of these differential equations was performed on an EASE 2133 analog computer and a PDP-7 digital computer connected through 24 channels of analog/digital and digital/analog converters
Space-Time Magnetic Spin Correlations of Anisotropic Heisenberg Systems by the Method of Moments of a Diffusivity - Spectral Representation( Book )

1 edition published in 1973 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The longitudinal and transverse time-dependent spin correlations of Heisenberg spin systems with cylindrical symmetry and with both uniaxial and exchange anisotropy are evaluated in the limit of elevated temperature, by the method of frequency moments. The zeroth, second, and fourth frequency moments are determined by thermal expansions of commutators of equal-time spin operators and their time derivatives. The frequency wave-vector spectral functions are established by these moments via the hydrodynamical representation, based on a two-parameter Gaussian diffusivity. The moment equations in a generic form apply for all spins, for arbitrary range of the exchange interactions, and for arbitrary dimensionality and lattice structures and are particularized with next nearest neighbor interactions for a linear chain, a two-dimensional net and a simple cubic lattice. The effects on the correlation functions of varying the axial anisotropy, the exchange anisotropy, and the interaction range are investigated. The resulting time-dependent correlations and their Fourier transforms are calculated, exhibiting features predicted by theoretical considerations and pointing to several conclusions. The nature and formation of the bond in the explosive bonding of metals by James Francis Kowalick( Book )

2 editions published between 1968 and 1970 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wave formation in explosive bonding is viewed as a special case of the transition from laminar to a turbulent metal flow regime set up along the collision region between two metal interfaces. Employing a novel semicylinder technique developed specifically for this investigation, dynamic parameters of the process are used to determine Reynolds numbers for dynamic metal flow. These are correlated with conditions for obtaining wavy bonded interfaces between metals, the most desirable type of bonding from the standpoint of obtaining superior mechanical properties. A Reynolds number range of 0.38 to 14.7 is established as a necessary and sufficient criterion for explosive bonding. The explosive bonding mechanism is described by using a viscous flow model for metal under impulsive loading. Results of an analysis using this model are used to predict interfacial appearance along the weld seam. Dimensional analyses are employed to derive empirical relations predicting the onset of waves in terms of gross process parameters and material properties. (Author)
Design study of self-calibrating electrical measurement system( Book )

1 edition published in 1963 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A fully automated self-calibrating electrical measurement test set for field use is proposed. The key features of the system are: (1) a set of converters for reducing all measurements to quantities involving the basic three parameters (voltage, resistance and time); (2) direct electrical measurement capability, reducing the number of measurement devices in the field; (3) computational capability for the solution of measurement network equations and the performance of error analysis; (4) full automatic execution of stored program calibration procedures and measurement routines; (5) self-check philosophy to insure fidelity of the system at all times; (6) minimal standards package consisting of single standards of resistance, voltage and time. The standards package is replaceable on a periodic basis. The system is described on a technical basis after which a proposal for the fabrication of a prototype model is presented. (Author)
