The Wealth Weapon : Four Arguments About Multinationals by Ben J Wattenberg( )

1 edition published in 1980 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"When President Garter responded to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan by slapping an embargo on U.S. grain shipments to the U.S.S.R., he used ""the wealth weapon"" to defend American strategic interests and human rights, as authors Ben J. Wattenberg and Richard J. Whalen proƯpose in this book that breaks new ground in analyzing U.S. foreign polƯicy. Writing from their different perƯsonal perspectives (as a liberal DemoƯcrat and a moderate Republican reƯspectively), this pair of partisan acƯtivists offer a lively, balanced set of arguments, pro and con, for an activist U.S. foreign policy. They and a cast of invented characters representing opƯposing viewpoints debate whether U.S. foreign trade and investments and American multinational corporations should be used to pursue national goals and objectives, especially in dealing with the communist nations. The authors argue that the post-Vietnam reduction of U.S. political influence and military strength overƯseas gives future presidents little choice but to use the largely exploited economic strength and wealth-creatƯing ability of America to protect vital interests abroad - just as President Carter felt compelled to do on an ad hoc basis after the Soviets took over Afghanistan. They call for a consisƯtent, long-term use of ""the wealth weapon"" in close coordination with U.S. allies and trading partners. As veteran political analysts and soƯcial critics, the authors take a fresh, provocative and informative look at a phenomenon too often left to dry-as-dust economists: the role in the world of giant global corporations whose reƯsources often dwarf those of nation-states. As they declare, the authors set out to write the first truly readable (and even enjoyable) book about multinaƯtional corporations - and they have succeeded amid a world crisis when their timely message anticipates toƯmorrow's headlines."--Provided by publisher

High mach number and materials research program. phase i. aerophysics research studies( Book )

1 edition published in 1961 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Instrumentation, Vacuum systems, Computers, Simulation.) (*Mach number, Reynolds number, Lift, Drag.) Theoretical and experimental investigations of high speed gas dynamics were carried out. The experimental investigations included stagnation point heat transfer measurements in low Reynolds number flows in the existing helium-driven shock tunnel. Electron beam densitometer studies were continued. Modification of the existing hypersonic shock tunnel to incorporate a combustion driver and a six-foot diameter nozzle was initiated. This modification will allow an increased performance up to a Mach number equal to 30 and density altitudes to 300,000 feet. The theoretical investigations included a study of viscous and inviscid non-equilibrium hypersonic flows about blunt and sharp leading edge slender bodies
