Nausea by Jean-Paul Sartre( Book )

872 editions published between 1900 and 2018 in 23 languages and held by 7,028 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Winner of the 1964 Nobel Prize for Literature, Jean-Paul Sartre, French philosopher, critic, novelist, and dramatist, holds a position of singular eminence in the world of letters. Among readers and critics familiar with the whole of Sartre's work, it is generally recognized that his earliest novel, La Nausée (first published in 1938), is his finest and most significant. It is unquestionably a key novel of the twentieth century and a landmark in Existentialist fiction. Nausea is the story of Antoine Roquentin, a French writer who is horrified at his own existence. In impressionistic, diary form he ruthlessly catalogues his every feeling and sensation. His thoughts culminate in a pervasive, overpowering feeling of nausea which "spreads at the bottom of the viscous puddle, at the bottom of our time -- the time of purple suspenders and broken chair seats; it is made of wide, soft instants, spreading at the edge, like an oil stain." Roquentin's efforts to come to terms with life, his philosophical and psychological struggles, give Sartre the opportunity to dramatize the tenets of his Existentialist creed

Often criticized, and all too rarely understood, the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre encompasses the dilemmas and aspirations of the individual in contemporary society. The principal text of the modern existentialist movement, Being and Nothingness contains the basic tenets of his thought. A work of inherent power and epic score, it provides a vivid analysis for all who would understand one of the most influential philosophic movements of our time

Bringing together two of the century's greatest minds and artists, Saint Genet is at once a compelling psychological portrait, masterpiece of literary criticism, and one of Sartre's most personal and inspired philosophical creations."
Anti-Semite and Jew by Jean-Paul Sartre( Book )

202 editions published between 1940 and 2016 in 10 languages and held by 3,053 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Written by a non-Jew and from a non-Jewish point of view. Nothing of the anti-Semite either in his subtle form as a snob, or in his crude form as a gangster, escapes Sartre's sharp eye, and the whole problem of the Jew's relationship to the Gentile is examined in a concrete and living way, rather than in terms of sociological abstractions
The wretched of the earth by Frantz Fanon( Book )

118 editions published between 1961 and 2017 in 7 languages and held by 2,974 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Written at the height of the Algerian war for independence, Frantz Fanon's classic text has provided inspiration for anti-colonial movements ever since. With power and anger, Fanon makes clear the economic and psychological degradation inflicted by imperialism. It was Fanon, himself a psychotherapist, who exposed the connection between colonial war and mental disease, who showed how the fight for freedom must be combined with building a national culture, and who showed the way ahead, through revolutionary violence, to socialism. Many of the great calls to arms from the era of decolonization are now purely of historical interest, yet this passionate analysis of the relations between the great powers and the Third World is just as illuminating about the world we live in today"--Publisher description

A political drama set in the fictional country of Illyria between 1943 and 1945, the story is about the assassination of a leading politician. The story is told mainly in the form of a flashback, with the killer describing how he carried out his mission. The killer's identity is established from the beginning, but the question is whether his motivations were political or personal. Thus, the play's main theme is not on who did it but on why it was done

Sartre's study of Baudelaire is one of the more brilliant achievements of modern criticism. Then he put the theory into practice in this book on Baudelaire
Search for a method by Jean-Paul Sartre( Book )

103 editions published between 1960 and 2005 in 7 languages and held by 2,334 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

-- Back cover
